This on-board gigabit ether net gives strange problem. It works most of the times but at times it does not work.
Distro: Ubuntu 8.04 (I am not upgrading/changing distro, it ain't broken, wont fix. ;-) )

If you feel the LAN circuit is ok then it can be due to your power supply. Sometimes pulling out the power connectors (big and small) from the mobo and inserting them back, solves the problem.

AFA the hardware is concerned, I am sure there is no issue.
As per Arun's suggestion I have changed the driver. It seems the problem will go away. With old driver I noticed that there were large number of dropped packets in RX. with r8168 driver that count is zero so far.
I will know for sure if the issue is resolved after I reboot the system.
The driver is Ubuntu 8.04 was r8169
I downloaded RTL driver from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&...
and compiled installed the same on the system.
