Maybe it has something to do with the devices having only root permission? Even I have this problem. I cannot run mp3blaster (which I use only for volume control) as anything but root. For playing mp3's I use splay. 4 times faster on my machine. Even for that I changed the permission of /dev/dsp.

If you are using debian you have to add the normal user to group 'audio'.

(politely) hahaha. I meant it used 1/4th CPU resources as compared to mp3blaster/xamp/etc.etc./winamp/etc.etc.
