Hello all,
I've been invited to give a lecture on Linux ( technical + philosophical ). I want to "enlighten" them on the virtues of F/OSS. If any of you guys are into Linux related education / propagation activities then please let me know what might be the critical points that one must cover. Also, I think I'll show them some eye candy. Any good demos / videos available for download to showcase Compiz Fusion or the likes??

Along with Compiz/Fusion foo, show them KDE Education project (http://edu.kde.org) too.

Got it. I have an hour of time with me per batch. What they expect is for me to talk to them about computing in general and then specifically about Linux / OSS. I plan to emphasize on the "free" as in "Freedom" concept. Any idea what particular examples I should cite MS? Apple DRM? Sony BMG case?

I second that. And also tell them what the RIAA / MPAA are doing in the US - that will set their thinking right on copyleft.
I think I said too much.

I'd request that you do a quick view of "Free Culture" - has lots of nice real-life points you can refer to and get people to think "duh !! I never thought that it was so"

If they buy a diary, the diary maker does not impose restrictions on the buyer whereas in closed software, not only do you give up your privacy but also pay ransom to access your own data. If they want to start a legal multimedia business at home they can do it for free with libre software or cough up more than a lakh for closed software.
Show them free multimedia packages for editing and creation. See if DJ softwares are available for Linux.
Play internet radio stations like www.sky.fm Play different media formats to show how everything runs just the same in GNU/Linux.
Their comp is so vulnerable to viruses and spyware when surfing the net and checking mails. GNU has no such horror stories.

Soundgarden? Hydrogen? Audacity? cf: the copyleft post above.
Thanks everyone!
Sorry, couldn't reply to this thread earlier as I was ill. I took all suggestions into account ( well atleast those which came in before my scheduled lecture ). The lecture was very well received. The Freedom aspect, 3D games on Linux, Music, Chat Messenger, and other facts really got their attention. And the most important thing that REALLY got them to sit up and take notice was the fact about viruses, spyware etc... When I asked if anybody bought a legit copy of windows - all said no! When I told them that what they were doing was illegal and they could be thrown in jail for it, they really got scared =P hehe. Anyway, when I told them the virtues of Linux and the fact that I get sound sleep because 1. I am not pirating software. 2. I am assured that my system is safe :) They were very impressed :)
Once again, thank you for the suggestions!

Supertux r00lz!! At least, I think so, and my 5 yr old daughter is extremely interested.
As they are high school students, why don't you show them some scientific packages? IIRC, one of the *LFY* issues recently featured a cd...and there is a bio-informatics spin of Knoppix out there too.

The Fedora Games Special Interest Group came up with a kickstart for games at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Games/GamesLive perhaps that would be of some help

Ok. 9th Class students can love some science softwares: http://edu.kde.org/science
Also, if you are running Debian, check: apt-cache search games or games section.
openareana multiplayer can be shown if 2 or more PCs are available there.
