Hi,
Im planning to buy a new laptop, and i intend to use Linux as the operating system i use on the machine. My old latop had Via chipset in it, and therefore i have faced lots of trouble in making Linux work on it, so this time i want to make sure that the machine I buy, would fully support it. So, i need some recommendations as to which laptop would be the best as far as Linux support goes. I am planning to buy a Dell Inspiron 1525. Is it the right choice or should i consider something else ?
Thank You
I use lenovo 7757 with ubuntu and dual boot. while I have problems detecting sound and video with ubuntu 8.04 or earlier, I have been told that 8.10 (ubuntu) has no problems. Take better counsels

I've been using the Dell Latitude E5400 with Debian for about 4 months now. It's a Core 2 Duo at some 2.3GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 1280x800 14" display. Purchased with FreeDos, so didn't have to pay Winduhs tax.
Most of the stuff has been working fine. Major gotchas are:
- The WiFi adapter doesn't work with the FOSS drivers. The closed source driver works fine. The good news is that a FOSS driver for the chipset is expected Real Soon Now.
- Suspend to RAM and resume didn't work for quite a while, but I managed to get it running after lots of tedious searching on the web and experimentation. Suspend to disk also works, but resume still doesn't :)
Apart from that I've done all sorts of stuff on the box including Xen virtual machines and Oracle (for a porting project), didn't face any problems.
If you can live with the two limitations I'd recommend the machine.

Best possible aproach is to buy a laptop preinstalled GNU/Linux distribution. That ensures full support for all the hardware in the laptop. That also encourages manufacturers to sale more laptops and models preinstalled with GNU/Linux.

However, if your workload does not match the existing awailable systems please make a list of models which match your reauirement.
Once you have few models please check the compatibilty of each model with GNU/Linux and seach and/or ask on this or other mailing list.
I had in past lenovo r60 which was 100% compatible with Ububtu 6.04
I recently bought Acer Aspire One (Intel Atom processor) preinstalled with linpus Linux and since then I have replaced linpus with Fedora Core 10. All the hardware is working fine. (card reader not tested)
Thank You

Got mine on Saturday and installed Crunchbang Linux on it - a spin off from Ubuntu. It required Broadcom STA proprietary drivers. Wireless works with WPA2. Everything else is also working good. Also tested XBMC Live (also derived from Ubuntu). This also worked well.

I am using Debian 'Sid' on Apple Macbook White early 2008 model. Apart from some very good tweaks during installation and later to get work 'wifi' and 'isight', it is working perfect now!

I use the Inspiron 1525 with Debian 'Sid' on it and it is working perfectly for me. Suspend/resume, suspend to RAM, camera, wifi all work fine. The wifi didn't work with the stable distribution of Debian (and I didn't have enough patience to keep trying, so I just used Sid).
Just make sure you order the model with the intel wifi chip unless you want to be bothered with the broadcom chipset and proprietary drivers.
Although, as an aside. I'd advice you to get a Thinkpad instead. I'm not particularly fond of the Inspiron's build quality. It just feels flimsy.

We use Dell Latitude D620 and D630 here at work. No issues whatsoever. At home, I have a Lenovo G3000. Apart from wifi, everything works out of the box. apt-get install b43 on Debian/Ubuntu solves that problem.

I would recommend against the Toshiba Satellite series.

I would advise Acer laptops as they are practically trouble free and their Service Center is located locally at Mahalaxmi. However do check for Linux compatibility on Google.
Came across the following - http://www.linux-mag.com/id/7255
YMMV w.r.t their availability in the Indian channel.
