I want to set up some computer-versus-computer chess gamesin linux, so that they can be running all the time and I can watch the computer play chess- preferably, a series of games that go on forever.
Most software doesn't allow this but I think there is a linux program which does.
Can someone suggest the app that can do this for me?

You want to look at xboard... That's where it all stops. http://www.gnu.org/software/xboard/
Tons of great engines available (all have ELO ratings, not FIDE ELO). Crafty is one which I like when it comes to engines, but then there is a sea of smart engines, chose the ones which are popular, rated and creative. An engine which lets you vary strength is also something you want to look at. Another great feature is to start of with an engine at a particular position. If you are not comfortable with xboard, there are many alternatives to it as well. I have tried Kchess, and a few GTK ones, all are pretty decent, and let you.

Watching engines play can be crazy if you use opening books, first 7-10 moves in 2 seconds... watch that! Middle game is fun, but engines can be repetitive if not playing against a human...
