Haven't opened that link but doesnt Ubuntu have network install? Using FTP or something? IMO the install can start even using a floppy?
Does teh laptop support boot from LAN?

worth a try - in the old days switching harddisks never worked in linux, but recently (actualy about 3 years back it succeeded - that too with redhat 9)

With debian you can install on one machine and then switch to another as long as the ide interface and master / slave settings are not changed. If u do change that u need to edit /etc/fstab.Make sure discover is running. If not just add the modules to /etc/modules. You will face problems only if you install on ide and then switch to sata / scsi cause you need a different initrd.

Well actually you cant do that except by dd from an ide drive to a sata drive, and then try to boot from sata.
