I heard some one say that when users are students at college they get everything free of cost but once they graduate out of the college, they will have to pay to use it. This could mean user's data being held hostage with the provider unless the user pays to continue using the service or in the ideal world they could provide a way to export the data. These are just my opinions based on whatever I have heard (no proof or references to cite), so it is good to take it with a pinch of salt.
At my alma mater, they just asked us to point our MX records to some server of Microsoft. They didn't bother if we had existing email infrastructure and the ways to import the data into the service provided we chose to use it.
Thanks & Regards, Guruprasad

This is one part of the story. The other part being who owns the data.

Please send such concerns/questions to Alagunambi Welkin alagunambiwelkin@fsftn.org. I have raised the same concern. It is just not students but also faculty / administration staff.
