Hi,
My neighbour is sick of his Windows 98 and now wants Linux on his desktop machine too, after using Kubuntu on his laptop. His is an old P3 566MHz computer with 96MB RAM.
He needs to play videos, mplayer will do. For music, I need suggestions for a lightweight mp3 player. He needs something WinAmp-ish. Amarok, he loves, but its too heavy. I hate xmms and I heard bmp is not being developed these days..
I'm thinking about trying out XFCE and if it seems heavy, Fluxbox will be the default.
Now the question about the distro arises, because I need all the above mentioned packages in the repository of that particular distro. Also, the packages need to be compiled for i686 rather than pentium4, like Fedora is these days, if i'm not mistaken..
Should I try out Xubuntu? Or do you have suggestions for some other distro?

How about Vector Linux(http://vectorlinux.com/)?

Alright, Vector Linux it is! Thanks for reminding me :-)
Now, any alternative to XMMS?
hello, did you try out slackware? I have a cd set for the same and I have installed it on computers with low memory. or I have heard that debian will be just fine. Krishnakant.

Ah yes. Debian was on my mind. The problem with Debian is, I don't have the patience to download those CDs right now. I've heard that the first couple can be enough, but I'm not sure that the XFCE packages would be available on the first two CDs.. I'll look that up..
As for Slackware, I've wanted to try out Arch Linux for a while. AFAIK, it's Slackware with a good package manager, Pacman. Hmmm. Choices are becoming a problem here :P

I have the 14 CD's of Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a "Sarge" with me. I can pass those to you, if you can collect it from me.

Hmmm. I'd have preferred the DVD..

Nah, not enough space on MY computer to compile packages for him. :)
P.S. Why would kmail not quote this email properly when I hit reply? All it would quote was this:

Actually, I understood the joke, but the fact is that Gentoo does run fine on such low end machines. It is quite ok to install using the binaries provided with the newest release, because they're compiled for i686. The only problem would be compiling the software. This can be done away with if one is ready to upgrade the software only when a new version of Gentoo is released. But Gentoo has no proper release schedule that I know of.
Anyway, the workaround is to compile packages for i686 on a faster system, make binaries and install them on the slow machine.

Try Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/). Regards, BG

Would it be totally non feasible to invest a bit in 128 MB SD RAM and get some more memory to flex?

No, that's what's most unfortunate. Upgrading the RAM or rather, spending ANY kind of money on that box is not an option, because he just bought a new laptop :)
The laptop runs Windows XP and Kubuntu with XGL. Yesterday the fellow told me that after using Kubuntu for nearly a month, he got sick of using Windows on that old box and desperately wants me to put Linux on it. Hence this thread.
He's not the only one impressed. His classmates in the college who've seen his Kununtu are absolutely in love with it too..

I would suggest Debian. The minimum requirement is 24MB RAM and 256MB harddisk for base system.
I have installed it on my P2 266MHz (but I have 256MB RAM) system and it is running superbly.

For this configuration console based players will be good. I would suggest mp3blaster (but it won't be a substitute for gui and if he is a newbie it won't be good to suggest). It has got some good interface but cannot use mouse though.
I have a screenshot here

I'm running WindowMaker and it is quite good and easy.

Debian has 686 kernel for sure but dunno about packages for sure.

I have used mp3blaster and it can be a little 'strange' to use at first. It's just a matter of getting used to it. Hmmm. I think though, he'll feel right at home with XMMS after using Winamp for so long. If it does lead to performance problems, I'll tell him about mp3blaster.
And yes, he's a complete newbie.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Hmm, I've never used WindowMaker myself though.

Fedora Core 2 worked nicely on my P3 450MHz with 192MB RAM. I would recommend upgrading the RAM on that machine. Rest everything looks fine. If you want a super slim and responsive installation then go in for Debian Sarge. My P1 166MHz works like a charm and the install is just over 300MB :) Though I dont have X installed and no multimedia :P

Since your neighbour is an old P3 566MHz. computer with only 96 MB RAM, he will not be in a position to run latest distros unless you are a wizard in keeping things trim. Distros with kernels above 2.4 use more resources. For XP to Linux migrators, Mandrake/Mandriva distros work best as they are multimedia ready. For MP3 and DVD, you simply download some extra stuff. I have used Mandrake 10.1 earlier and now I use Mandriva 2006 and it is simply too good. Your neighbour should use Mandrake 10.1.

Rony.

Yeah I've used Mandrake 10.1 in the past and it IS good. I like Mandrake. It's a good distro. But in this case, I'm going with Vector Linux.
Grazie :)

Mandrake 10.0 for 96mb ram - X is a bit slow, but useable. 10.1 may not install at all
