I agree, a good opensource accounts package is needed
What's the name of the book?
Has anyone evaluated adapting the many available on SF?

Let us hope so. However, even if tally comes out with Linux oh sorry
Linux/gnu version I am sure it wound not be open source. I think without
wasting further time we should start working on good, open source
accounting
package with all the bells and whistle of Tally. Data migration from Tally
should be part of that package. As Devdas has already mentioned one of the
program avasp is already available. I will concentrate my effort on that.
There are already some good accounting software available. If you need
help (my domain knowledge : Accounting, Costing and Business
Consulting), please call me on 9819384313. Also have a look at web-erp.
It is a good package, though some changes are needed.
I wonder why Indian magazine like Linux For you have not published article
on such a promising piece of software. I wish they published how to code in
avsap and carry out usability study of it.
There was a quiet good book published a few years ago on how to write an
accounting software in vb6. The basics of the logic and pattern has not
changed, if we need to build a fresh one, we can use that book as a
basis and proceed. It was the only comprehensive book on how to write an
accounting software.
I had suggested something along the same line 2 years ago, many nodded
their heads and then noone moved with it. (before you ask, I do not have
the development skills in Linux to be able to do it on my own).

Saswata

that?
If you are talking about ASCII art roses, like this:
@-->-->---
Hearts would need a better hand at ASCII drawing than mine.
If you mean graphical icons, that's usually a feature of the IRC
client program.

they are probably gifs or flash movies... generally
application programmers do not get into 'making' a
seperate file format for icons...(i know yahoo beta
uses flash..older versions use simple gifs)
the icons or flash movies should be in the directory
which contains the main program...

Not at all. The problem is nobody asks any questions. One has to start working with embedded linux to ask questions. The recent thread on linux on cell phones was the only thread on embedded stuff in a long time. Then again it was just general probing for info which is available on google. If somenone is really interested he would have done the bakground, outlined the problem, outlined plausable solutions and asked for comments. I for one would have definetly responded.
If people are interested we could flag off an embedded project on either ARM which is the most popular and easily available processor or Power PC which has great performance, or ye ol X86 (Via C2/3) which has a little of everything + familarity. There are others available too like 683xxxx, Mips, Sh, roll-ur-own Sparc on xilinx / altera. This involves a lot of HARD WORK which our grrreat engineers find wholly unpalatable. Why to rack ones brains when one can cut and past from EFY /Elektor sundry 25 yr old gizmos like wireless network (1 infrared reciever, 1 ir led, 1 555). If u thought it was 802.11 perish the thought, most havent heard of such complex decimals "in the syllabus". And microprocessors=8085 menta kit (it should be labelled dementia kit).
It is a pity that even with tools like GNU/Linux and mediums like the internet and email our level of education and awareness has become so pathetic.
Jeez here i go again like an old foggy.
I am personally interested in robotics. This would involve mechanics, electronics, embeded hardware and software and tonnes of fun. It would also provide self education to those involved / seeking.

Hi guys,
Since the website
http://www.ilug-bom.org.in is hosted on a
server at TIFR ( i think so ) , can we have an IRC server set up there so
that, there can be more interaction, fast responses and good discussions ?
As for improving the ettiquete of this mailing list , we can invite people
who make mistakes to a room at IRC and teach them the proper way. And also,
i think it will also compliment this wonderful mailing list. I request Sir
Nagarjuna to look into this.
Regards,
Saurabh Sawant ! :)

This is correct. I knew these guys when I used to live in Dombivli once. They
know what they do, and have a good reputation in the computer technician circle
(in Dombivli at last).
