I find it remarkable that this list can discuss to no end the merits of using a license for mailing list posts but question the relevance of this post !
Is it not only relevant but also remarkable that media (journalistic media, nonetheless !!) is being released using the CC license ? I mean in light of the whole bunkum talk of licenses for mailing list posts and attribution of some comments printed in some not-all-that-great-in-the-first-place magazine, isn't this post at least a bit relevant ?!

As far as I can tell, they aren't really using opensource tech. - their 'high-res' video content is downloadable in mpeg format and the online streaming version uses a flash streaming embed from blip.tv (although blip.tv now supports Ogg Theora, they are not using it). Even though I find this Al-Jazeera / CC news fascinating since we run a completely FOSS video archive of our own, I honestly don't see what this bit of news has to do with Linux / FOSS.

Um, wouldn't discussing the license of the mailing list be relevant to the mailing list?
Is it not only relevant but also remarkable that media (journalistic media, nonetheless !!) is being released using the CC license ?
I find it remarkable, yes, but there are lots of things in the world that are remarkable - I don't see how its relevant (to this list). I honestly don't agree that the CC license has anything to do really with FOSS or Linux. I think cc-licensing of media is very different from GPL / FOSS licensing of software. You can draw analogies, but analogies can be drawn to lots of things, and I'm not sure they all belong in this mailing list.

Well, just because there might have been some (in your opinion) off-topic, perhaps mindless chatter, on the list, doesn't make it a dumping ground for any bit of 'interesting' news that doesn't really have anything to do with the list ..
Anyways - thanks for the link, Praveen - I do find the news fascinating and think it could fundamentally change television journalism, but I still don't see what that has to do with FOSS or Linux :)
Hope that ends the thread, though flames are welcome. -Sanjay B (http://pad.ma)

cc-by license allows you to transcode it to any format you want. cc-by license for the videos is the link to FOSS. If the list policy is to discuss only about software I rest my case.

If that is the opinion of the entire list (at least one more person seems to agree with my interpretation) I rest my case.

I thought cc-by license selection is relevant for the list and on topic, especially with the comment from Lawrence Lessig.

nothing to do with moderators as this is not a moderated list. This list is driven by peer pressure - you are a very valuable contributor to this list, but I feel that you get carried away at times and introduce stuff that is laudable but not relevant to the list. If a list does not restrict itself in some way, it serves no purpose as it becomes too general. If we are focussing on things like CC, we have to admit discussions from people who use adobe illustrator and photoshop and doze etc to produce things in proprietary formats which they then release under CC. You need a different forum to interact with people like that.

Thanks for recognising my contributions. I appreciate your efforts to keep the list functioning efficiently. I would like to discuss things which are on the borderline and is interesting to many in this list. I am wondering how to go about doing it. May be a new list with much liberal rules is the way. I would like to know if any members are interested in such a list.

1. please do not leave this list 2. for broader discussions please join Delhi LUG list - they are very evolved there and their goal is to transcend themselves to the broader issues that face the human race rather than confining discussions to mundane things like linux/foss

So here we go. If anyone is interested to discuss any thing under Free Culture without any restriction head over to http://www.freelists.org/list/freeculture-mumbai and join in.
A free culture is one where all members are free to participate in its transmission and evolution, without artificial limits on who can participate or in what way. The free culture movement seeks to develop this culture by promoting four things:
* creativity and innovation; * communication and free expression; * public access to knowledge; * and citizens' civil liberties.
So from now on all my posts to this list will be limited to Free and Open Source __Software__ as per popular request and peer pressure. But I may reply to any posts that interests me.
Cheers Praveen

cool - I would join if it was not restricted to Mumbai (I thought that you were in Bengaluru - or was that some other Praveen?)

If you suggest a better description, I can change it too.
It is just that the list started from Mumbai list. There is no geographic restrictions. Its the same Praveen, now in Mountain View, CA, USA.

in that case, remove the 'Mumbai' and announce it in all the LUG lists

Maybe if it were named freeculture-india it would be better. There would be no need to create one for each district/state.

As I mentioned earlier, most local groups does accommodate Free Culture in their discussions. Mumbai did not, hence it is started out as Mumbai. If later we feel it needs to be called something different, we can do that too.

Hi Praveen, already joined. I do have a query though. Freelists doesn't seem to be as verbose as mailman. It subscribed but didn't tell me what is the e-mail address I need to send mails for it to appear to the mailing list?

How can that be done because he was doing some cleverly disguised cross posting to multiple lists and on some of those lists on which he was cross posting discussing creative commons was on topic :-).
In his own golden words " I can't help it, you have to suffer it :-) ".
And if you don't suffer he will go ahead and create another list. Any takers for the new list ?
Cross posting is a pathological addiction and it take some time for de-addiction (especially when you are in bad cross posting company for over a period of time).

Because 5 posts on the same topic by the same person can be annoying and a waste of bandwidth and time for another person. Remember not everyone may have the time and bandwidth that you have.

Hi Vivek, I have read about multi-posting and cross-posting and most of the entries or whatever I read is about newsgroups.
AFAI read Praveen mailed it to 5 other groups. While yes its inconvenient to you what about the other readers to the mailing list.
Are you saying that all the readers of the 5 mailing lists are on all 5 mailing lists?
Perhaps they might not have come to know of a development otherwise.
Comments, suggestions all welcome.

Just unsubscribe from lists where you and Praveen (or any other person you love) are subscribed together. Done! Did Praveen knows that you are already wasting your bandwidth by reading his mails 5 times? We have button called 'Delete' too.
Thanks.

spam filter is also there - I have now added a filter that sends all mail that is licensed under any licence to the spam folder. So now it doesn't irritate me and I will no longer bug the list about it. Peace!
