hello, this might be slightly off topic I am marking the off topic part of this email with <ot> and ending with <noot> because the OT part will be most interesting to people like JTD in particular. <ot> I have a 40 g ide hard disk and I am aware that there are USB to IDE converters available. my idea was to convert this IDE hard disk to an external USB hard disk. how viable is this? I know that the power would be a problem, correct me if I am wrong jtd. but USB pen drives and external hard disks are all powered from the USB port itself. please suggest me if this is possible. <noot> now on to the gnu/linux specifrics. if my above idea is viable, will my hard disk be sda or hda? how will it be mounted? and if I want to load a complete operating system like debian, will it be possible? regards. Krishnakant.

Completely viable.
I know that the power would be a problem,
Note a problem. get an adapter with power connector.
correct me if I am wrong jtd. but USB pen drives and external hard disks are all powered from the USB port itself.
Only pen drives and laptop hardisks. Regular hardisks have an external power adapter.

sdx where x is a to h, depending on what other scsi /usb stuff is connected
how will it be mounted?
mount -t <filesystem> /dev/sdxn /<mountpoint> where x is as abv and n is the partition number.
and if I want to load a complete operating system like debian, will it be possible?
Absolutely. But it will boot only if the mobo bios supports usb booting and u have installed grub for the special case of usb booting.
thanks jtd for your prompt response. now I will tell you the real reason which is certainly not at all off topic. every one reading my threads will recall that I had proposed to have suggestions for marketing gnu/linux to common man. retaillers and other small shops are my first target. and jtd was kind enough to suggest me the idea of dosemu and running foxpro softwares. thanks jtd for your offer of even coming over to my side and helping me. what I plan is to have a external hard disk on which I can try different foxpro based softwares. so I can have a portable linux setup and I can take it along with me. jtd, you suggested using an adapter to power the hard disk, can you suggest one? I have a samsun hard disk 40 gb. actually it is a problematic hard disk and I am getting it corrected. seams it has some bad sectores, and I have heard that it can be corrected if the sectors are patched for ever. again correct me if I am wrong. after doing that, I need to have that adapter as you suggested. probably I will make a good shock proof case. one questions arises, will it be a right thing to carry this hard disk in travel? thanks again. Krishnakant

Why not just purchase an 80G Portable HDD with Casing and USB for less then 5K on Lamington road and save yourself some trouble?
You will not require those power adaptor and stuff and it's absolutely lightweight and portable.
thanks again. Krishnakant
HTH With regards,

Good idea.

The usb adapter box will have an adapter. Buy one which has the adapter.

Not this one. And the usb case is not shock proof. U will have to use a laptop hdd costing around 5000/- for 60gb, if u want reasonably reliable portability.
Otoh u could use a 1 gb pendrive.

Ready made case with power adapters are available, have a look at http://www.vipower.com.tw/ExternalEnclosure.php. These are expensive, but very well made. Cheaper variety are also available.
You can put PATA, SATA or SCSI disks, and the external connection can be SATA or USB. The cases made for PATA hard disk and USB external connection are the cheapest of the lot.
Hope this helps.
Thanks and regards.
