Will it be newbie friendly? I currently do web design using PHP and would
like to switch to Python when I get time. A workshop would help.
Also any prerequisites on what software the laptop should be loaded with?

Yes, as per the requirements you should be able to understand if you're even familiar with the basics of python

If you want to try your hand at what goes on during the sessions. Keep a copy of DJango and pylons installed.
