On a freshly installed RH7.2 m/c, decided to test FS consistency in absence of a proper shutdown. The very 1st time i switched off the power directly........my installation CRASHED.......
had to manually get into maintainence mode and run fsck for next 10 mins......uuuggghhh

yes it should'nt... Yeah check your fstab and demsg for checking if root is being mounted as ext3 incase ur root is mounted as ext3 and tune2fs -j /dev/hdxx says that journal already present it can mean only one thing hat RH has modified the rc scripts to detect a "hard shutdown" and runs fsck as a precaution,
I had to convert my / to ext3 by mounting it after I booted from the installation cd what i did was booted from cdrom and got my linux prompt via alt f2 mounted my root and ran /mnt/sbin tune2fs this is because tune2fs gives a permission error if you have booted normally Though this may not apply to you as you have installed ext3 from scratch... Do let us know.. -Ritesh

Yes, there is some configuration specific to RH which does an fsck on ext3. Please check the docs.
I read something related on some other ML where Alan Cox said something to this effect (he works in RH).

I've never faced this problem w/ rh 7.1 kernel 2.4.9 & ext3. works like a peach. Just says / was not unmonted cleanly....recovering journal...[OK] and no fsck is required, same for /home too. I've been thru this atleast fifty times in the lst couple of months or so.

Sharukh.
