@Kartik i know that but you are not getting the question. I had installed kde4.2.2 when kde 4.3 was just about to come....But after when it came , Synaptics or apt didn't upgrade 4.2 to 4.3..even on manual checking of update , they said 'your kde packages are uptodate' and thats with others too.. So, I wanted to know the reason behind this... As if canonical is still not supportng 4.3 in jaunty or anything else...
My question is WHY not HOW (first step is Googling always)...Why it is not included in original repo list
Similar case is with firefox update too, it is not giving option of updating to 3.5. As a result , i m running the tar of the newer version ..but the installed one is still 3.0.15
@Rony : I m not a linux newbie, have been using it for 1.5 yrs now (so little above newbie) and have solved all types of problems whether it is non-functioning of alsa, or compiz graphics prob in hardy or to make wine from source etc etc.. by intensive google searching.....

Please ask Ubuntu Developers about it. Or use Debian 'Sid' Unstable (at your own risk) if you want constant updates of whatever you installed in your system.
Thanks.

I had this query when I wanted Open Office 3 on older Ubuntus. what I found out was that the dependent libraries used to run the latest packages are not updated in older distros due to compatibility issues. Why are they not able to make older distros compatible to newer libraries is for the Ubuntu developers to answer. Anyway, that is the reason you will be stuck with older packages in the official repositories.

IMHO, there are 2 ways to run a software package. The slim and trim way is to use system shared common library files that the package as well as other packages are dependent on. The other way is to bundle the dependent libraries for a particular package along with that package itself. This adds to the bulk of the system. What you don't get through the official Ubuntu repos is the latest updates for system shared library files. What you get in the Firefox tarball is a fully functional package with its dependent files included and this collection is quite OS independent.
May I add here that I have found GUIs of apt-get quite lacking in accuracy of listing packages, compared to the results you get in command line. I recently worked with Kubuntu 9.04 on my system and Ubuntu 9.04 for a client on his system. I found that synaptic was quite accurate in listing packages in Kubuntu but in Ubuntu it would not show packages in the list, though they are installed afterwards through command line.
For firefox 3.5 I do remember seeing a package in the 9.04 repo and I had installed it. ( I am now back to Lenny after a disastrous direct upgrade to 9.10 ). Run 'sudo apt-cache search Firefox' in command line and go through the results.

Your original post does not mention that you googled and installed KDE 4.3. It was mentioned that you were stuck with buggy KDE 4.2.2.
