We are trying to indianize KDE. We have translatted po file (of kedit) but after making mo file and putting it in appropriate dir (/opt/kde3/share/locale/hi/LC_MESSAGES/kedit.mo ) and exporting lang variable when we started kedi we saw no change. When we started kedit again it showed square boxes for all entries(both translated and untranslates). When i copied german mo file in hindi dir then also it showed boxes. While when LANG=de it works fine in german. Anybody having any idea why so?? Most interesting is that after placing mo file and starting kedit first time we saw no change but second time onwards(even after deleting hindi mo file) when LANG=hi it shows only boxes. Anybody having any ides.

I have little idea on what could be wrong, but a indlinux [http://www.indlinux.org/hindi/] KDE or Gnome members may be in a better position to answer you.
I am interested in what you are doing. Please put a small howto for people like me. Incidentally I was not able to get proper font rendering of hindi, after trying qt3.2. You had any success? I am using stock KDE 3.1 from Mandrake 9.1.

Take a look at i18n.kde.org You should get enough information there. I am also interested in the same area but I would like to tranlate it for marathi. take a look at indic-computing mailing lists at sourceforge.net they should be able to respond better to your querries.
