No experience with an USB model. Hauppauge WinTV (PCI) works for me out of the box (bttv driver).

search string "bttv+usb" leads to kernel documentation file: http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/video4linux/bttv/Cards There is a bunch of USB models listed. Also, check if mythtv support the cards.
