Hi luggers ,
I've installed Mandrake 8.2 & I am having Motorola SM56 PCI internal modem on ttys3 or com4 . I am trying to connect to Internet thru Linux.
I tried to configure my system using Mandrake Control Center , but when i clicked on "Connect" tab , it shows "connection failed" after sometime.
When I list my hardware using HardDrake tool it lists my modem correctly , so I think Linux has recognised my internal modem . But when I click on properties for modem , it shows all details like vendor and all except for 'kernel modeule ' for which it says 'UNKNOWN' .
So do i need to install driver ?
Please Help . Thanx in advance .
Kedar.

Hi Kedar
There are no current drivers for this modem. SM56 Motorola modems are software modems (or win-modems as these types are called). I guess you will be better off getting another modem (check hardware-compatibility-list). It is best to get a external modem as most of the common ones will work perfectly.

Since we are on the topic of modems ..... I also use Mandrake 8.2. My modem works fine, but is there any way of making the modem play the line sound when it dials and connects ? Meaning, while it is dialing and connecting, I would like to hear the sound from the modem to know if it is getting the line, dialing, whether line is busy or waiting to connect, etc.
I could not find the relavent option in the control panel

Use the L3 string for your modem.
