Hi, When I am executing a php code like below:
<?php $timestamp=mktime(0,0,0,3,1,2011); echo $timestamp; ?>
on Linux and Windows system then there is always a difference of 19800 in output. The result shown on Linux system is always 19800 less than the value displayed on Windows system. But theoretically output on both systems should be same because the number of seconds elapsed since 01/01/1970 to 03/01/2011 should always be same on both operating systems. Can any one please explain the reason behind this difference.

19800 seconds is 5 hours 30 minutes, which is the difference between IST and UTC. Check the local time on both the systems.

Why? Is his query off-topic here? Or is it off-topic on ilugc?

Maybe it is YOU who needs to read up on cross posting? Why don't you tell the list why you think the OP is guilty of such an unpardonable transgression as cross-posting?

Don't take offense. It is better to be informed about the point we are making especially when a hint has been given.

Dude, don't mess with the Channel Police, you'll find yourself behind metaphorical bars being subject to the tender mercies of hairy hunks smelling of cheap country liquor before you can say Jai Kumbhakaran!

Your point is valid and intentions are good but your approach is not positive. If you take the trouble of admonishing people for their mistakes at least add a line or two to tell then why. One line mystery messages can irritate people.

Rony: Cross-posting is not evil many times. There is nothing to admonish the OP here. He only cross-posted to this list and ilugc - which is a perfectly legitimate use of cross-posting.
Kenneth is confusing cross-posting with multi-posting, which is truly evil.

Right. The first link from there says:
"Let's assume that you still want to send your message to several groups. (Sometimes there could be a reason.) [...] The way to crosspost is simply to compose and send one message once, just writing two or more newsgroups names" (here, mailing list names).
The second link says:
"There is one very important DON'T in cross-posting. Do not send the same message separately to different newsgroups, i.e. do not multi-post. If your posting indeed is necessary and relevant in more than one newsgroup, always use the cross-posting facility" (here, mailing lists - not newsgroups)
The third link says:
"Cross-posting is often wrong, [...] However cross-posting is right some of the time. Multi-posting is a waste of bandwidth, money, and people's time, with no advantages whatever, and should never be indulged in."

actually it does not - I get lot of mail offlist (and sometimes onlist) thanking me for guiding them. This issue for example is covered in the list guidelines and also in the excellent summary of the said guidelines in your footer. People who want to learn will learn - people who do not want to learn will not - it is a question of attitude.

The best attitude is a positive attitude.

Absolutely true.
Now that the OP is made aware of his "mistake", can we try to help him solve his problem? :) Or has Binand already done that (clueless about PHP and lot of other stuff)?

He got the same first reply there too (that it is the IST/UTC difference), but he chose to follow-up with additional questions there.

But the _OP_ hasn't bothered to post it here. Many users are still alien to the concept of sharing knowledge, give and take. They are still in the sponging stage of information pooling where they want all the information from others without sharing anything in return. Why should I take the trouble, my problem has been solved anyway.
