Countless successful entrepreneurs have complained that procedures, licensing terms, rules and infrastructure _sucks_ in India. And what
do
we do? Nothing. We just want to transform Mumbai into Shanghai. Short attention span eh?
<aseem> The rules, regulations and procedures today are much better/simpler than
those a few decades ago. Well they might not be the best or simplest but we are changing. A system so huge does require due time to change. We are changing much faster in past few years IMO. </aseem>
Ok then, starting importing sniper rifles and lets begin hunting down each and every politician we can find. That'll get us 99.999999% out
of
is shit. I'll personally settle for the round off error ( 0.0000001% ).
<aseem> Are you serious? Or is it just the frustration erupting? Think before you suggest such extreme steps. What happens after you kill all the politicians? I would rather suggest you to go out and vote for the best (least corrupt?) candidate available. Or be a candidate yourself. I believe killing somebody does not solve <em>any</em> problem. </aseem>
Stop denying the fact that we need to overhaul _ALL_ procedures in
this
country. Not a _single_ procedure is freakin' straight forward.
<aseem> Who is denying that we need an overhaul? The process has already started IMO. </aseem>
We call this country secular but in almost _all_ forms we ask for the person's religion, cast, sub-caste? Gathering demographic data, are
we?
We say everyones equal but we still have SC/ST, NT, OBC?? Why?
Women "empowerment" groups want 33% reservation for women. When has reservation made anybody stronger, more competent, more talented?
<aseem> Is everyone really equal? Or are we just saying that? Open your eyes, Look around. Look at the matrimonial ads. Most of them specifically mentions even the sub-cast required. Don't make up your opinions just by
looking at the BCs/OBCs in metros. And even in the metros the situation is far from good. Look at the workers at various construction sites/roads. Look at the beggars (Jari-mari, snake charmers etc) people cleaning the city, people sorting the junk, People doing all the dirty jobs they are from a specific section of our society. They don't know where their kids were
born let alone the birth certificate and cast certificate. This is the section largely away from even primary education. And reservation does help people to become stronger. But again it is a gradual process which spans across generations. You cannot expect to undo the effects of a system which was running smoothly for millions of years within 50 odd years. There are tribes where deaths due to malnutrition are common. Being a father myself I can only imagine how it feels to watch your kid dying in front of your eyes due to hunger. That explains the existence of extremist groups like Naxalites. And reservations not reaching right people does not mean we should not have reservations at all. Just as we do require laws despite the numerous loopholes in it.
<disclaimer>I do not get benefits from any of the reservations</disclaimer> </aseem>
When was the last time someone was judged based on his / her talent in
this country?
Let me answer it for you.
***_NEVER_***
<aseem> Again I doubt if you really mean what you say. If we take this very list as a sample you will find that almost everybody is At the current position due to his/her talent. Even our President, Prime
Minister, Finance minister are on those positions only due to their talent. I would expect you to be more responsible while making statements on a public forum. You just cannot make grossly incorrect statements like that. </aseem>
Oh boi. We are in deep shit, aren't we? :|
We suck. India sucks.
Mera Bharat Mahan. Sau mein se 99 beimaan!
Patriotism anyone?
<aseem> So I guess you would grab the first opportunity to get out of this shit by migrating to greener pastures. I would rather stay back here and do my Rs. 0.02 worth of efforts to make this country a better place to live for the generations to come. Attitude expressed in your mail will do more harm than good to the nation. I am not overly patriotic who would cry after hearing "aye mere watan ke
logo" or blame Pakistan at every opportunity. I strongly recommend reading the latest "Business Today". People _are_ thinking about the issues our country is facing and efforts are being made to improve the conditions. Just being cynical does not help. Grow up. </aseem>

I was going through this site www.laptopsmumbai.com Laptopsmumbai.com belongs to some dealer in mumbai who sells all brands of laptops IBM ,HP , ACER , COMPAQ, TOSHIBA & SONY and i saw all branded laptops . i Found out a few things
Most entry level laptops today come with linux pre-installed , atleast in acer and compaq . . It would be interesting to note that IBM even in its non- windows model doesnot endorse linux , instead it ships them with free dos . Toshiba and Sony still dont sell any laptops in India without Windows . Acer which ships almost all its laptops with Linux mentions on its own site www.acer.co.in under each model ' Acer recommends Windows Xp proffessional' contd......

Also, GNU/Linux comes pre-installed and GNU/Linux is supported are two different things.
Warm regards,
ah

Yeah and notice that they always mention: "For utilizing full functionality of your hardware, use M$ Windows XP". It's M$'s monopolistic attitude ;) Get used to it :).

My mistake. They say 'another operating system' but at the beginning of the page they say "Acer recommends M$ Winblozes XP". Thats as good as saying - "Use freakin' Winbloze or else your laptop wont work."
Here, have a look.

Assuming that pc manufacturers pay microsoft for the OS (duh..) at a fraction of the retail price and they build it into the cost of the PCs/laptops, SO If we do NOT want the OS supplied by microsoft, do they give us a discount? is there an option for the same hardware config sans operating system?

I think Acer is the only one which offers this...

Even the IBM dealer gave an option for an OS free system costing about 5 to 6K less than the XP preinstalled one. This was about a year ago just before IBM passed over to Lenovo.

There is an option, but no manufacturer mentions it much.
Here is a true story of a successful refund: http://linux.vandeplas.com/acer/winrefund.htm

How did u manage 248MB??

U can use grub or lilo. Imo grub is better because it is very flexible and particularly useful if u juggle disks and distros. There is also a grub for dos. For ANY GNU package u search freshmeat, sourceforge and google before asking where can i get it. GNU software are not warez hidden in some pokey corner of the universe that u require magic incantations to download. They are all publicly available. The installation procedures for most packages are very simple, very well documented and AVAILABLE on the web.

Y is the world so biased towards Windows when they themselves are using Linux to push their products ?
I think users can continue using the linux version that comes with these laptops had they been fully functional version of linux , but i know from one of my cousin who got a acer laptop with linux installed on it that the pre-installed version even lacked the gui . Linux i think should be given full respect and should not be used by manufacturers to j ust to lower costs

wells its quite simple if they endorse it they need to support it . ibm provides support information but doesnot directly support it .
the distros bundled are usually unusable since they are not bundled with prebuilt drivers for modems / wireless etc .
i know some big cos working with oems to over come this.
when any oem manufacturer says "we recommed XyZ software " a part of the media campagin / or whatever arrangement is shared by the XyZ software company . not many linux cos are in a position to do this.
linux on desktop requires a far more commitment from both os and oem vendors which is slowly moving in a positive trend.
its only a matter of time . remember - inertia exists everywhere
