hi gurpeet,
If u want to use windows as ur gateway to the internet then either
ur windows machine shld be running 2000 server which has the feature of internet sharing so u just have to put the win mac's ip as the gateway on ur linux machine (/etc/sysconfig/network)
or if u are running win 98 or something u will have to put a proxy server in ur win mac, not all proxies would be working. try winproxy.
hope this helps.
regards, funky.

Hi, I have a linux server (with windows on 4-5 clients), and am wanting to get broadband connectivity. dishnet tells me that though a modem would be suitable for the number of computers (5-6), i have to install a router because the modem will not work with linux systems. is this correct?

[snip] lemme allay some of ur fears nd put them to rest....;)
I have seen a few DSL connections at a prev employer of mine. Dishnet gives you the option of terminating it via a RJ45 cable too. Now whether there is a DSL modem involved or not here......i aint too sure abt.
But letz assume for technical reasons that they provide u with a DSL modem, now make sure that the o/p frm the modem to ur gnu-linux box is via a RJ45 cable. This makes it easier for u to set things up for ur LAN. This is the setup that i know works and it should without a hitch for u too.
As for a Router...yeh u'll need 1. But what better than the gnu-linux box that u r making use of as a ROUTER/Firewall/NATting device.
Pls read up at www.tldp.org, u'll find that the gnu-linux can scale from tiny wrist watches to mainframes running 40,000 paralell linux clusters.

Hi,
As trevor said ... DSL router has the ethernet out port which u can either put to the switch with a cross cable .. or with a normal cable to ur ethernet card so driver problem doenst arise ... as far as the DSL Modem is concerned ...
atleast @ my previous employer we had a DSL Modem frm ETH and which was plugged on to the switch ... no need of router at all....
or may be ur DSL Connection vendor is trying to sell u a router is guess ;)
