Hi All!,
I want to buy new mother board for my AMD Athelon 64 CPU. Before I make a purchase, it would be great if we know all the on-board devices are supported by Linux Kernel.
I have 3 choices
1. Asus - K8V-MX (http://www.asus.com.tw/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=14&l3=276&model=118...)
Chipset: VIA K8M890 VIA VT8237A Audio: Realtek ALC660 6-Channel Codec LAN: Realtek RTL8201CL 10/100M LAN PHY
2. Mercury - KVM800M (http://www.mercury-pc.com/product-detail.php?link=p-mainboards&subtitle=...)
Chipset: VIA K8M800/8237 VGA: Embedded UniChrome II 3D Graphics with 64M share memory LAN: VIA VT6103 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet PHY Audio: Realtek ALC655 6-channel audio Codec (Compliant with AC 97 2.3 specification)
3. MSI - K8MM-V (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=...)
Chipset • VIA(r) K8M800 Chipset - HyperTransport™ connection to AMD(r) Athlon™ 64 processor - 8 or 16 bit control/address/data transfer both directions - 800/600/400/200MHz "Double Data Rate" operation both direction - AGP v3.0 compliant with 8x transfer mode - Graphic integrated • VIA(r) VT8237R Chipset - Integrated Faster Ethernet LPC - Integrated Hardware Sound Blaster/Direct Sound AC97 audio - Ultra DMA 66/100/133 master mode PCI EIDE controller - ACPI - Supports 2 Serial ATA ports
Any help/pointer in deciding the compatibility will be appreciated. I have done some google search but found more non-English pages then English pages.
TIA for your help. With regards,

Not sure about audio. But everything else should work.

Audio works properly with the via82xx ALSA drivers. I'm using the alsa-drivers package instead of the in-kernel drivers.

I've got a Gigabyte mobo with Via Unichrome K8M800 chipset mentioned above. Works fine without any issues at all, with direct rendering enabled.

Gigabyte service is good too.

Hi All,
Thanks to inputs from the G/LUGers and little search on the web, I have zeroed on MSI - K8MM-V MoBo.
Just received the MoBo from the hardware vendor and got it wired.
I am able to boot Ubuntu 5.10 (AMD-64) Live CD and all critical components (LAN, VGA, Audio) worked out of the box. SATA is not detected. In fact, writing this mail from Ubuntu 5.10 Live CD.
Here is the o/p of 'lspci'.

Many devices are detected as unknown.
Now I will hunt and try other distros and see how things work. I will keep you posted on my progress. Once, I have more details, I will post it on the Wiki.
So far, MSI - K8MM-V seems promising and seems the right choice.

Hi Dinesh, 5.10 is an older version. Why not try out the latest 6.10 AMD 64 bit or 6.06 AMD 64 bit LTS (3 year support).
Regards,
Rony.

Thx for the suggestion. However, Ubuntu 6.06 AMD gives error while booting. May be CD is bad. Will get another CD and try.

Rony.
I was able to install Ubuntu 5.10 on the SATA HDD but it's not able to boot. Investigating the cause. If I find any solution, I will post the same to Wiki.

Try OpenLX and the results so far are very positive.

Your signature shows OpenLX, so are you into developing it or is it your own company. Do you make distros for local hardware? :)

Rony.

I have this motherboard. The Unichrome chip was a problem wrt DRI. That was back in the days of Xorg 6.8 though. Xorg 7 came with the promise of new Unichrome drivers, but I had already put in an NVIDIA card, so I don't know how well the Xorg drivers work. If you're not interested in DRI, X works fine with the vesa drivers.
Everything else has been working perfectly.
