Dear Linuxers,
We have Red Hat 9 Personnel Edition. We install Custom-Everything onto the Desktops requiring DB2.
Previously we installed DB2 Version 7.1 on Red Hat Linux 7.2.
For us Installing Db2 same version onto Red Hat 9 is first time. It installs all the components. But the last before successful completion, it should creates a DB2 Instance. It is creating a problem there. I'm attaching db2setup.log file for your reference.
Hoping of early reply, Thanks for help.

Hi,
Honestly I have never used DB2 before so I could be wrong. Hence i leave it to you whether you take this seriously or not.
To me this seems like a version conflict of GLIBC library. since you are saying it worked fine with RedHat Linux 7.2 it seems DB2 needs the older version of this library.
But installing the old glibc/libc library could break your GNU/Linux installation please be warned.

Every time I have talked to IBM guys, they have promised free support and help for anyone who is using DB2 on Linux, either for experimenting or for developemnt. May be you can call them up and see if they can help you.
They have a separate department dealing with Linux initiative and DB2 on Linux at their office at Nariman Point. (I dont have their phone no, unfortunately).

I got the same hunch. But the original poster says he installed "Everything", which will also include the option for "Old applications" or something like that in the RedHat installer. That should include old versions of glibc, I think. The best people to talk to would be IBM support ...
Sameer.
hello friends a while ago i posted about my wish to revive the PRC or the Project Resource Center on the list. In my opinion this woiuld be a good time to do that because most of the engg colleges will start a new session in july and they'd be looking for projetcs to work on!
In that context i would like to again request to think about the projects thatr can be listed on the PRC and corresponding mentors for those projects. All the people who can think of any projects and/or mentor these projects please talk abouit them on the list.
We can have a web presence of the PRC where each project is listed with the mentor. for each project we can have a homepage where its details are listed. students can thus contact the mentors listed up there and take up the projects....
I AGAIN REQUEST ONE AND ALL TO PAY SOME ATTENTION TO THIS AND START SUGGESTING PROJECTS AND START VOLUNTEERING FOR MENTORSHIP. thanx GNUrpreet
one suggestion. why dont we have a guideline for selecting projects and scopes.
also publish a list of mentors and topics of interest on lug site (who will manage and create that ? )
regards harsh

I dont think I am ready for "mentorship" as such. But still if someone is interested I am free for a "chat" or something.

It would be great if we had Wiki space on the lug site. Things like links and faqs and such are best maintained in collaborative way. I am dead busy in coming days otherwise would have been of more help than words.

Thanx in advance...

[snip] what are you trying to accomplish by doing so... i suggest you use debian since its easy to modify... i have made custom distribution and live cd-roms based on debian and redhat... and i thinks its faster and easier on debian

hi harsh, thx for showing interest... can you take up the reponsibilty of framing the guidelines for selecting projects and scopes. you can do some mind work on that and post the guidelines that you come up with on the list. thereafter we can have a discussion on it and maybe improve the guidelines(peer review ;) ). what say? can u find some time for that??
also publish a list of mentors and topics of interest on lug site (who will manage and create that ? )
sure! we have to find some mentors and a list of projects. CALLING AGAIN FOR MENTORS AND PROJECTS... regards GNUrpreet
over the weekend will draft some points for review by the grp.

Gurpreet,
please go ahead, invite students with projects that would like to have guidance in the form of the PRC and lets take it from there.
I know of iiit hubli whom we have been interacting for a very long time and has large amount of students working on Linux projects already.

your problem is almost certain to be with the symbols (glibc). chances are that you will have to get a version compiled against RedHat 9
specifically ( from your log file ), one of these seems to be the executable ( binary ) causing the problem.
/usr/IBMdb2/V7.1/instance/db2icrt -a CLIENT -u db2inst1 db2inst1
/usr/IBMdb2/V7.1/instance/db2icknm
== Might I suggest a quick fix. ( not a fool proff method, more of a "hack" ) . Try at your own risk.
- I have never worked with DB2 and the error could be from elsewhere
1. Do an ldd ( "ldd" ) against these files as in:
"ldd db2icrt", "ldd db2icknm"
this would be the most important IMHO "ldd /usr/IBMdb2/V7.1/lib/libdb2.so.1" this file seems to be linked against something specific in the libc of 7.2 which it is not finding in that of 9
See what files are missing (dependencies) and copy the reqd. files from redhat 7.2 into 9. that may do the trick.
_DO_ _NOT_ OVERWRITE ANY FILES OF REDHAT 9 though, otherwise you could end up with broken system. and definetly do _NOT_ touch the existing libc of RHL 9.
also in case any files are indeed missing, you may have to try out a few locations since, you may not be told where the files are expected to be found.
This is not certain to fix the issue but it just might be a way out. this is a "hack" and standard disclaimers apply here :-)
