Hi
Does anyone know how to dump a VHS tape into MPEG-4 directly?
- Is there a hardware encoder that can be bought to get this done? - Are there any organizations that do this at a fee?
Any information on this would be great. I would like the RMS lecuture that was conducted on the 14th Feb 2003 at VJTI reach as many users as possible and thus to be able to download it from the internet I'm trying to get the size of the file to be fairly tiny at the same time not loose out too much on the quality.
Regards

My personal opinion is till we get a free encoding of the video done we should not distribute. My facility will be available only in March middle some time for doing this job. Meanwhile try to Kresit and IDC of IIT. Folks from iit could help here.

Most of the commercial "boxes" use MPEG-1/2 and not MPEG-4. You can capture the output of a VHF via a VCR & a TV Capture card on a PC. Then the encoding is a straightforward affair.

Which TV Capture cards you suggest I get from the market that works on Debian Woody or Redhat 8.0?

I think the ATI ones are well supported. But to get the job done ASAP, I suggest you run whichever OS you like and can do the work.
