Hi Friends,
I want to connect my laptop to internet through mobile phone or data card. But the problem is that I don't have much knowledge of it.
I tried to collect the informations on service providers from net. But I didn't get anything in details.
What I have heared is that Tata Indicom has better offer for it. And its speed is also much better as compared to others.
Before I try myself I want to get some important details on it from all of you.
I am using Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy im my Dell inspiron 640m laptop.
Bye

Does Dell Inspiron 640 m have a PCMCIA card slot? Or do you want to connect it differently?
AFAIK, Tata Indicom offers wireless internet connection but there are few hotspots in Mumbai. This is what I could obtain from their website, sometime ago.
Probably, the best way to be connected is only through wired internet. May be we still have a long way to go ;)

Would that be on a prepaid or postpaid? I have a postpaid connection and Airtel charges me INR 399 PM with a download cap of 100MB, which sucks big time!

In Kerala airtel offers unlimited GPRS connection on postpaid for rs. 1500/- (one year). I get ~ 8-10 kbps.

A good approach to start would be to find out the mobile models offered by Tata or any other provider, *with* internet access possible and through what interface. Then search for the models Linux related issues on google or provide the list here to know user experiences. :)

Rony.

I have been connecting via GPRS (Airtel) for the past 6 months or so. I didn't have much trouble setting it up after a bit of googling. The speed will depend on the handset. On my Nokia 6670 (connected via bluetooth) I get upto 7KBPS. An EDGE compatible phone would give you relatively faster speeds, upto 14KBPS or so.
Tata Indicom's VData card works well too. I have used it on my laptop and configuration is quite simple (This was discussed on the list a few days ago too). You will get speeds of upto 18KBPS.
Hi Vivek,
Can you give me the tariff plan in details for tata Indicom's Vdata card. Is download unlimited?

Yes for INR 1500, it is. Or else for INR ~700 there is 1 or 2 GB cap ( after that per mb charges apply, don't remember how much) . Btw, don't go by those figures. They will add infinite number of taxes and bring it really close to INR 2K in case of first plan. I am using that plan, it works well for me. Works out of the box with Kubuntu with kernel version 2.6.15-27-686 from their repos. And works everywhere I have taken it too.
Cheers!

The card that I used was not mine. I just borrowed it to see how well it works. The updated list of tariff plans are available on VSNL's website. The tariff that the owner of the card is being charged is INR 700/- PM, with a download cap of 1GB. I tested it on FC6.x86_64.
Hi friends, Thanks for giving me the details. But I want the details with different tariff plan. How much data can I download in a month? Is there any tariff plan where I can go for unlimited download offer.

this is a linux users group and not a roadside shop selling broadband connections. If you pay me 2K (in advance) I will give you complete advice on this offlist. Please send me your credit card details along with 4 digit code and specimen signature

You're a disgrace!
11 words is all that was needed to redirect him to Tata's website to get the information. Instead you make him feel like a friggin' idiot to even post on this list expecting a fruitful reply. I know because I would have felt the same if I was in his place.

Congratulations. This is a GNU/Linux oriented list, where we also have topics related to Linux, FOSS and some FOSS software. Hardware which works with FOSS is an acceptable topic, but anything going beyond that is off topic. While some offtopicness may be acceptable, too much of it is not. If you have not yet understood it, I recommend using your favourite search engine to find the meaning of the term SNR.

There is a difference between supporting Linux and acting as marketing agents for another company. The OP's questions were better suited for a Tata Indicom forum or their marketing department.

Agreed and I am not denying that fact. Just that there are less offensive ways of getting your point across.
