Hi listadmin ,
we are viewing the html mail with some junks chartcters
I think you can do something about it .
like using perl ----------------------------
use MIME::QuotedPrint;
$encoded = encode_qp($decoded); $decoded = decode_qp($encoded); ----------------------------
and using php
----------------------------
echo quoted_printable_decode ($str);
----------------------------
and then passing the output to the lynx/links to dump text so that we can see text messange properly Also eleminating the "References" section where links are provided .
Thanking you

This is purely a Rediffmail issue. Perhaps we can get Rediff to stop sending HTML mail?

The list admin should not be mangling the email body any more than adding the list footers.

If rediff sends HTML mail, why are we not seeing the entire HTML mail, but more like a lynx dump of it? is it being parsed by mailman and converted?

Hi Devdas ,
I agree with Rajesh ,
About the rediffmail issue the mail composer can compose mail in any format [html/text] and there some list where i get the exact mail including attchement . [you have to specify the choise of prefernce . see any yahoo group mail ]
But i think in our mailing list we prefer TEXT mail over HTML mail and we do send out only text output of html mail
either we can entirely reject the email which do not have text mime part message in the body of email or we convert the text out of html [quoted printable/ 7 bit ]
i think we had some mail flowing in this direction from Philips and other dudes a long time ago.
so if we sending the text mail as dump of lynx or links then we should do it properly as encoding of quoted printable is not exactlly as html .

the list admin should not do the mangling the script will do so .

me too. How bout a second round of poll to decide this ? AFAIK the last one decided to send warning to html mailers ?

Yes. We as in veterans and ppl aware of the issue.
either we can entirely reject the email which do not have text mime part message in the body of email or we convert the text out of html [quoted printable/ 7 bit ]
Nor is it good enough banning html mails since newbies don't know and don't care. We can't scare them away.
so if we sending the text mail as dump of lynx or links then we should do it properly as encoding of quoted printable is not exactlly as html .
righto there should be tons of utils / scripts to do exactly that. Script geeks please help here.
The list admin should not be mangling the email body any more than adding the list footers.
I don't think we should suffer in silence and keep requesting ppl to use text.
the list admin should not do the mangling the script will do so .
bingo.
So for the record my vote is : We extract the text from html mails and display after proper decoding. We don't throw them nor do we display html.
cheers, C

Just rejecting with a HTML prohibited message sounds so much nicer.
Also, how do you propose to deal with quoting? Lots of people like to say "See my response in $colour". All that information will be lost and needs to be retained for context.

rejection is not solution
we can send mail to the user saying that ur message is be modarated and subjected to alteration to convert to text message .as we not encourse html message .so next time post use text format mail .

and who do u think is going to moderate the mails?
so reject with the reason for rejecting in the mail is the solution. Hopefully the posters will actually read and comprehend plain text messages.

ya jtd ,
the rejection with reson email sounds good to me. But i thought every mailing list has got list modrator doing this job (issues like top posting and blah blah.. )

Hi,
I don't vote for or against HTML/TEXT mails, I have only one suggestion to make. I hope the List adim is listening.
A few days ago I switched from Evolution to Netscape mail on my machine. After migrating i had forgotten to change my mail send setting from HTML to Text. I sent a mail to LIP and ILUG. both rejected the mail with the subject "Mail contained 'Suspicious Headers'", Now how should i interpret this? My mail contained virus? This was highly impossible as i was using Linux to send mails.
Can somebody PLEASE PLEASE change the mail bounce settings and re-write errors for HTML reject mails with "Mail rejected due to HTML format, please recompose in Text format and re-send"
Regards Aditya

I am sending an html email, to see whether it gets filtered properly. I have just checked mailman configuration. It is set to filter html mail into text and pass. it should not reject html mail.
let us see how this email transmits.

It came in perfectly. Which brings all the way back to the same old problem. Rediff. Pliss to notiss that only mails from Rediff are so badly mangled .. all other HTML mails have always made it in very nicely as text.

the moderator job is just that - to moderate threads and posts that tend to fly off and get personal. Not act as net nanny to a bunch of @#$$ who have no inkling about list etiquette and not only post in html but hijack threads, add idiotic footnotes about the secretive nature of their pissy public mails, top post, post without subjects ....rant rave etc etc

Hi, Maybe this could help http://ftp.cfu.net/pub/amavisd-new/README.sendmail-dual
What is needed is to pass an argument to the Mesmtp mailer to specify the port.
Maybe you should be looking at postfix ;-)

Creat a .forward file in your home directory, with a line similar to the following one: "| /path/to/yourscript.pl "
Sendmail will then pipe all your mails to the script "/path/to/yourscript.pl". You can write the script to do anything with your mails including sending (forwarding) to another MTA. Probably, perl (with Net::SMTP module) will be a good choice for such kind of job.
Make sure that .forward file has 644 permissions.
