Great. No X, no wm, no moz, no gnome / kde. That reduces the footprint by half.
and it is also going to have a simple program which is menu driven, no bash.
Bash is a must and is not too heavy anyway.
and of course the festival screen reader.
will check festival and friends footprint. But the above should fit in 128mb.

Very easily done. Kernel and modules will be about 1% to 2% of your distro size anyway. So it's not going to save any worthwhile space anyway.
What mobo, ram size?

hello jtd lots of regards. if you remember I had informed you about the project specs I am persuing. by the way I have a via mini board with 256 mhz intel processor. 128 ddr ram, ac 97 sound card and the regular display. I once booted slacks from a pen drive on the same mobo. so Know that gnu/linux will work on it. and the sound came up nicely. but slacks is not giving me any support for custtomising the system. more over I don't want to run my system on fat fs any way. I am now procuring a vertex mobo with intel chipset and ac 97 sound etc. the company has already tested 2.6 kernel on the board with 128 mb ram. the board is 5 by 3 inches and also works on batry and power adapter. it is costing rs 7000 and will provide me exactly what I want. now only thing is that I haven't been able to find the knopix howto which you were talking about. and yes I have ubuntu installed on my system, so any idea how can I make use of the same? I don't want to install knopix on my system now that ubuntu is working fine. I am as it is comfortable with debian and its new desktop flavour. Krishnakant.

Great!!, Can you give the name, Tel number of distributor for this board.

128 mb is good enough with no X. The bios must allow the graphics mem (which is shared0 to be reduced to 4 mb. Some mobos particularly low cost ones do not permit this, instead reserving half the mem for graphics. Also u need to know the details of the chipset and ensure that all drivers are gpld.
it is costing rs 7000
That is very expensive. Only the size is compact compared to via cle266 (Rs.3000).

yes I have that board with me as well. but seams it can't work with batries. the board which I am getting now is having the system work on a 12 volt batry. so may be that's the advantage. and they have tested the boards with gnu/linux so no problems. any ways I don't think I will use their drivers even though they will provide it. because the chipset I tested in their factory worked with my slacks version on pen drive out of the box.

You require an appropriate psu. There is 90 watt supply available for USD30 retail. That is what is being added to your board.

You absolutely must get the chipset details. U are more than likely to come to grief in the future otherwise. And that is irrespective of wether it works now or not. Since gnu/linux get updated almost every day, if the board has closed specs u are sunk.

Since gnu/linux get updated almost every day, if the board has closed specs u are sunk. but I am not going to keep on updating the system. by the way I am not using these boards for making computers any ways. so if they work now, I will persist with the current kernel and also I find that festival worked very well with it. actually I used a small version of festival called flite or festival lite. so I am pritty sure it works.
