Hi,
I am having AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with ASUS A7V8X Mothorboard. I have an enclosed PC cabinate to prevent my PC from dust. The cabinate opens only from front when I want to use it. I do face a heating problem. The temperature easily rises to 60+ oC without any process using CPU cycles. I use CPUIdle on Windows which does a very good job to keep the temperature down to 25 oC when CPU is not in use(even when the room temperature is 30+ oC). But for long compilations or while applying Photoshop filters the temperature rises to 65+ oC also.
BTW is there any utility on Linux like "CPUIdle" which "cools" the CPU while not in use?
Regards Aseem

I think linux kernel does internal cpu power management and does not need any such utility... not sure but felt like read somehting like this somewhere...

I am curious ... which AMD processor do you have?
Sameer.
hii , as an end user i find intel celeron 1.7 ghz on HIS better than Amd athlon xp 1.8 ghz on asus motherobard both with 128 mb ddr ram . i havent faced any cooling issues though . i would strongly not recommend Amd .

Why? Do you say that from experience? Would like to know more.

Have a Duron(morgan core) 1200MHz with a volcano II fan on a Via KM133 board. That CPU is a powerhouse. Never been above 56deg C ever.
Go AMD anytime.
Also have a : AMD AM80386 40Mhz Pentium 200MHz P II 366 MHz

Celeron 1.7 Gig better than Athlon XP 1.8 Gig! Your definition of "better" would be quite interesting, I guess :) Oh wait! 128 MB RAM could dilute some of the interest....
the heating problem is the only stance where AMD loses....all the rest stances like performance etc.. AMD beats INTEL anyday

go for the best motherboard...
i.e ASUS m/b with VIA chipset
ASUS m/b has autocop which keeps a track of your motherboard temp and your CPU temp as well this is coded in the bios
ASUS goes best with AMD (i am telling you this of my personal experience) i have 2 computers. 1 running on ASUS A7 Pro motherboard and AMD Duron 750MHz processor and is running for more than 3 years now(i hardly even shut down the machine) the 2nd machine is on ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboard and an AMD Athlon 2600+XP processor and is running for more than 6 months now(even this i dont shut down)
NO HEATING PROBLEM FOR ME....
IF YOU WANT HIGH PERFORMACE AT CHEAP RATES... GO FOR AMD(Performs better than INTEL) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harsh" mailme@backendguru.com To: "GNU/Linux Users Group, Mumbai, India" linuxers@mm.ilug-bom.org.in Sent: Tuesday, November 04, 2003 11:02 AM Subject: Re: [ILUG-BOM]AMD processor ??

Never knew CPUIdle is a fridge. How else would it get temp below room temperature ?

windows 95/98 did not use the HLT instruction. That is why utils like rain, waterfall, cpuidle came about. Linux does this internally. But some utils like lvcool work extremely well with certain chipsets (for whom they are obviously made).

The problem is the heat-sink compound that comes pre-stuck on the heat-sink. Replace it with a decent country-made one... it works wonders.
Also, most kernels have the capability of throttling power to idle units. If you think your kernel doesn't have the functionality, you must recompile it.
I run an overclocked AMD Athlon 2400 XP with the same ASUS mainboard. The temperatures do not exceed 47C
