Hi list, Just saw a glimpse of an ad for BOSS (the 'desi' Linux distro) by CDAC & NRC-FOSS. Was gone just after I realized what it was. Quite a pleasant surprise.

Atleast it is better than paying for airy-fairy security in the form of AV. Notice how AV which was an acronym for Audio-Video is now an acronym for Anti-Virus.
Well, CDAC & NRCFOSS should better save-up some money from TV commercial, & pay for hosting BOSS on some better server as the connectivity to bosslinux.in website really sucks, connections gets reset every now & then.
Whats the use of TV commercials if ppl are not able to access BOSSLinux ISOs.

Looks like its hosted internally at their office(218.248.24.21 ?). No wonder Indian ISP's have their own down times . Got to bear with it .

I learnt from some source that they apparently had to host stuff on own servers only, not even like using SF for ISO downloads.

that's absurd. I couldn't connect to the site all day - finally managed (6 am and Indian ISPs work well :)) - max speeds (wgetting from a server hosted at hetzner.de) seemed to be about 40k/sec .. ah, and now even that's ground to a halt ..
not a nice way to distribute 2.8gb dvd images :(.. is there a torrent somewhere ? I'm happy to host a mirror if their connection stays up long enough for me to get the file ..

Well that ad doesn't say much but made colourful like 'School chale ad' maybe its same production .
The other ad in related videos says a lot about localised desktop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh5gwTSL1lw&feature=related

Try going to the BOSS website and it says in English, 'Boss is busy and not available'. :-D

I think they would be mailing the media to home ( like shipit :) ) if you take care to ask politely and repeatedly ( AFAIK) .
The person/team to contact would be your local BOSS support centre which is located in major Indian cities ie CDAC offices .
Since this is ILUG Bombay : Boss Support Centre
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing ,
Gulmohar Cross Road No 9
Juhu, Mumbai 400 049
Ph: 022 - 26201488
Email: bosslinux.support@cdacmumbai.in
My advice would be to call them and ask it would always work :)

that is if they have got the memo informing them that they are a boss support centre.
why not we tap iit resources ... the iit servers are pretty good... cygwin is loaded in iitm server i think fedora repositories are there in many iits... or let it be available in shops in majorcomputer shops and educational institutions...

I recently contacted them about the distro and they promptly replied back asking for my address details so that they can send the cds/dvds. Now waiting for the delivery (buts its only a week ago).
However, there is some misrepresentation on the website. It says, they send cd pack consisting of installercd, livecd and something else. But in the email communication they mentioned dvd. So wondering what would I receive and what would I do with it.
I am anyways happy that there is atleast a project like BOSS.

Ping/call them back . :)

They hardly take care whether their website is available/not available . you expect them to regularly update their website . IMHO they are govt employees(approximately) they need continous feedback/pingback :D
There is one place which does not need their servers to be up and you can contact them online . #boss-nrcfoss @ irc.freenode.net

do you remember those olden days of ubuntu ? version 5 or 6 used to come with a live cd and a installer cd. BOSS a debian distribution gets its inspiration from it :)
Now they can't fit everything in one CD so there is your answer .

me too . I wish they take care of the project and collaborate/communicate more with local FOSS people .
