Visit there website without logging in(www.sify.com). This will connect u to there default webpage for all the users connected thru lan.Somthing like (http://210.210.4.74:81/downloaddialer.php). There will be a link like "GNU/Linux users click here to download the Sify Broadband client ". Download this image and uncompress it and follow the installation mentioned in the readme file.

hi!
i too am a subscriber of sify broadband connection and i use sify's client to connect. the client's documentation says that it can be run by a normal user which i found to be untrue. to be able to connect, one is required to be logged in as root. now, i read somewhere that this is insecure. is it true? what could be the solution?
regards, sarfaraz.

Right. sifyconnect -l (or sifyconnect -o) does not work unless run by root. Strangely, it does not give any error message, but simply does not connect.
To avoid logging in as root, you could use sudo. Ofcourse sudo can be dangerous sometimes and is not recommended to be run on sensitive or mission critical systems.
Also, another security hole in the Sify client is that it stores the login password in a file called sifyconnect.log in clear text. The exact location of this file may vary from distro to distro.

Nadiem.

yes, Surfing the net while logged as 'root' is not normal practice. Set permissions for users (if not done already)
