Hello,
Yesterday I got a new Acer 5740 with core i5, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD and all the regular things. It was the linux model. Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit was installed on it. The live CD itself showed all devices working, including wireless. There was one bug during live session. Every time the wireless was connected, the touch pad would go dead. This problem did not appear post installation. The devices working are...
Display .... gives full 1366 x 768 resolution. Sound .... After increasing levels and un-muting (maybe) it plays with decent Acer type sound levels. Touch pad ... Works fine. Bluetooth .... Linked with my mobile. Did not try any transfers. Wireless .... Works like butter. Used it in the live session itself for installation. Sound up / down .... Works from the dedicated keys. Brightness up /down does NOT work inspite of adding acpi_osi="Linux" to the grub parameters. Camera.....The gnome package camerama does not detect the video device but cheese does it flawlessly giving bright, crisp and colourfull images. Available in apt. camerama out, cheese in. Bluetooth and Wireless on / off buttons work.
ubuntu-restricted-extras installs the non-free stuff including flash player for firefox. Remember.... it is the 64 bit OS.
One bug that exists is that when changing desktop backgrounds, after selecting a second or third image choice, the machine freezes and has to be forced shut down. So I set my image once and lay off.
Overall a 'works out of the box' experience.
Could you please share the cost of the laptop. And no graphics card right? I'm also planning on the Acer model, so more interested.
Thank you.

The cost is less than 35K. Graphics appears to be 128 bit though I am not very sure of the make. In the BIOS it showed this 128 MB as the graphics memory. Did not pay much attention to that though. I bought it assuming no extra graphics card.
Also please try to post your reply below the original post and trim what is not necessary. Thanks in anticipation.

it comes with ATI Mobility Radeon?
get the proprietary drivers "fglrx", hope it helps you. free drivers for ati cards are installed by default, most of the time free drivers work fine. but fglrx is sometimes better when you install fglrx, it will break plymouth consistency, Check out for workaround for plymouth: http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2010/04/26/lucidubuntu-10-04-high-resolution...

Yeah :-) It did not have anything special. I checked again, it only mentions Intel HD graphics.

Thanks for the link. In my Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop pc, I tried out the initial commans with option A. It made changes as I can see smaller text font before GUI starts and I can switch easily between console and X in my pc. However the problem of display crashing is still there and what I am observing over the weeks is that it happens 99 percent when I compose mails in Thunderbird 3+. This is the third time I am trying to complete this mail. I hope I can send it before the display crashes again. I will look up the net if it is some Thunderbird bug.

Then it would be the graphics GPU bundled with the Intel chipset.

Afaik it's a radeon driver bug and is resolved in the latest kernel. Repeatedly switching between X and console also triggers the bug (black screen, locked keyboard). However ssh will work.

I am able to switch between X and console. I had updated the installation and will check the bug again.

Your 2nd post suggests that the agp is not radeon, in which case the bug would be something different.

FWIW - My observation - lappies with Intel CPUs the GPU is typically from Intel and a few have NVidia whereas those with AMD CPU typically have the ATI (part of AMD) GPU and few have the NVidia GPU.
The OP has already disclosed that his GPU is from the Intel family.
I have an Acer 5542 with ATI Radeon HD 4200 and I have experienced the console lock - no ssh access as well but that is yet another problem :)

True. I havent seen an Intel mobo with a radeon on board.

I have a mobo with hd4200. Switching X<>console will freeze the display. But ssh works, as does everything else. Firing up an X app reports no errors. Killing X and restarting does not restore the display. Afaik one has to reboot to restore display. Google said it was an agp kernel bug. Distro was Lucid.

If you could expand the installation report it would be very useful for everyone.

I already manage such pages - I have already given links too , Yet you have created new pages just for the sake for ilugbom wiki - #ridiculous
I know. Consider the page a mirror. AFAIK, ILUG-Bom members would more likely have an account on the ILUG-Bom wiki than on the ILUG-D wiki.

Well account is not a problem. Wiki always take 2 minute to setup your account. You can always use a your full name " Easwar Hariharan" as username. You can set Firefox to remember your password. Reuse and support existing effort is under FOSS philosophy. I can't force anyone. You have full freedom for all constructive and destructive works
PS: If you go to LUG@IITD wiki then you will find that there are 55000+ page hit till now.
