Dear Friends, I m having Conexant 56 Soft Enumerator PCI Modem, but I m not having its drivers of Linux and don't know how to configure this Modem. It has created great problem to me. When I installed RH Linux 7.1 @ my friends place he is also having SM56 PCI Modem of Motorola make. I found that in Linux, Internal Modems are making great problems for Linuxers. So, Friends any one of u send me the Drivers as an attachment and also send me the Step by Step Installation procedure for those drivers. If an one u may be have Wine (Windows Enumerator)'s Help then also send it to me. For Installation of Wine on Linux. Thankx 2 u all.... [OT] Perl is outdated

.. Or so some of our fresh engineering grads think. I've always wanted to learn Perl but I never got a Perl project. I'm still hoping. Compare this to one of my friends who has just passed his BE. He had been looking for a job for the past 2 months. He wanted to work on Java (he's a Java pro). Last week he was selected by a popular IT company to work on a Java project. He was happy, till he realised that they are going to put him on a Perl project instead. That was it - he felt betrayed. All I could advise him is that Perl is a great language and he should think of this as an opportunity to get experience on Perl and UNIX. I explained that I would have been excited if I were in his position. "Why not Perl?", I asked him. He said, "Perl is outdated!" "Gimme a break. Perl rocks. The best programs are written in C and Perl! [and Python, and Java, and... but I just wanted to make a point]", I said. He's not convinced. But, of course, he'll know once he starts working on that project. But I am irritated with this whole "Perl is outdated" and "UNIX is boring" attitude. Linux Kernel Installation

Hi, If I am compiling the Linux Kernel on one m/c and want to transfer it to other m/c. how do I do that? Should I do the following? Copy new kernel to other m/c's /boot dir copy System.map to /boot copy complete modules in /lib/modules/2.x.x Do i need to run depmod? put new kernel in /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo Boot m/c with ne kernel. Have I missed any vital steps? Will Linux (RH6.2) will boot without any prob? Do I need to copy /usr/src/linux/include any where, if yes where? do I have upgrade libraries / programs if switch from 2.2.14 to 2.2.19 or 2.4.9? Linux and Telex Support

Hi guys, Does linux have support for telex machines/telex data. I have an old 8088 based telex machine (diskless) which receives input from the serial port (9 pin) which i would like to do away with and connect the telex line to my linux box. Any pointers in this regard will be appreciated. We use this machine to send telegrams to remote areas as well as telex messages to our ships. Of course we do send emails to our ships through inmarsat, but would still like to retain the telex facility. [OT] connecting to vsnl ... Backup Authentication.

Hello ppl, this is offf topic .. but is it related to unix in any way ? sometimes when connecting to VSNL dial up .. i have received a "Backup Authentication %" or like message after entering my password. some ppl told me my password was hacked.. some ppl say the servers are busy ? does anyone know for sure what this means ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rahul Saxena: rahul"AT"inorg.org Fr. diald, how to start

Linuxers, I've installed diald from an rpm. The diald howto says that I have to start it from the /etc/rc.d/init.d/diald script. However, there's no such script existing. I've been trying to follow the diald howto, but I would prefer if someone having the experience mail me off/on list. Also, is it absolutely necessary to use a chat script with diald? kernel compilation

Hi Friends, Yesterday I compiled(recompiled) the kernel for linux 2.4.2-2 (RHL7.1 default). The steps what I followed are like this... (I'm telling you steps just to check whether I procced in proper way or not.) 1. cd /usr/src/linux2.4.2-2 [this is the dir where the kernel is stored.] 2. make xconfig 3. make dep [ what happens if we change step 3 & 4 ] 4. make clean [i.e. first step 4 & then 3 ] 5. make bzImage [ can we change this name to something like newkernel 6. make modules 7. make modules_install [Do I need to make & install modules before making bzImage?] 8. cp bzImage /boot/bzImage 9. lilo configration. What additional steps I required if I want to install kernel from new source i.e. eigther from cdrom or from another drive? How can I create new dir called linux2.4.x ( for that respective kernel.) The compilation come up with 2 errors. They are, Now my modem is not accessable to me even with root. whenever I try to connect to the internel with kppp it gives the message, "Sorry, can't open modem". Secondly, whenever I boot into linux it gives the following message, "mounting local file system: mount: fs type is not supported by kernel. [ Failed ] " Same message appears for remote file system. In this case remote file system is my windows partitions. Due to this, during shut down I get the message, stoppin automount [ Failed ] What are the changes I need to do to avoid this? We send only telexes to the ships through our telex machine. Of course for that you need a telex machine. For email, we have tied up with a service provider named station12 who is based in netherlands. An email is created through any email client, goes to my linux box, to hathway cable to station12 to inmarsat which locates in which occean my ship is travelling and sends it to their sat C terminal.
