I meant the precompiled driver binary.... And not the sources... I have the sources... How is Linux so secure ??

Plz tell me where I'm wrong: Linux is open source --> The Code which encrypts the login password is freely available --> A Baddie looks at the code and finds out the algorithm --> cat /etc/passwd | grep root --> Voila! the baddie has root password. Of course this does not happen How does Linux manage to be secure inspite of being open source? -- Sometimes it seems things go by too quickly. We are so busy watching out for what's just ahead of us that we don't take the time to enjoy where we are. -- Calvin

NTFS driver

Does anyone have compiled 2.4 series kernel to produce NTFS driver??? Could you mail it to me or otherwise tell me where I can get it. I tried google, but no use. Didn't find any precompiled driver. I need it badly. I need to transfer some project files from NTFS to Linux. I tried compiling the kernel, but it is giving some stupid problems. I'm using RH 7.1. I think, this topic of kernel not getting compiled properly was discussed earlier as well. Thanks in advance, Kunal Gangakhedkar

Inserting ide-scsi module to use with /dev/hdc

Hi For using a CD writer the parameter "hdc=ide-scsi" has to be passed to the kernel while booting (assuming the CD writer is /dev/hdc). This works fine. But having booted without that parameter passed to kernel, how do I insert the module 'ide-scsi.o' and tell the kernel to use it for /dev/hdc without rebooting again? Well, "insmod" inserts the module, but *how do I tell the kernel to use it for "/dev/hdc" ?* Abhir -- The only comment I can make is - There is nothing on which I can comment Then why am I writing this mail? Without writing a mail I can't explain it!

Indianising Linux: NOT transliteration

(Mr Kalyankar : this is for your info.) No I am not talking about transliteration. I am talking about localisation of internationaised packages/applications on Linux platform This involves extracting strings from C programs , marking the strings in the progranms for such translation and replacement and carryout translation of strings and manage catalogs and files for versions, setting up parameters for 'lacale' so that programs can on the fly chose the language (script, font, editing, input methods etc). there are some tools like glade to produce appllications(c-codes etc) gettext for extracting strings for translations, kbabel for managing the catalogs and translations etc and font generators for developing fonts and emacs for smartly editing files (called .po, .pot, .pox) and other tools . I need expertise in any of the above tools and cooperation in carrying out wide training for people with or without much technical skills. I also need editors (how to edit the translations ) so that work can be done on windows platform as also on gnu/linux and yet be future-proof as standards are changing. Jitendra

Well Ranjeet, I had said if you dont like MSN dont read ahead. Anyway its your anti-MSN(or MS) thinking talking here. If you check 1) Merriam-Webster: http://m-w.com OR 2) http://www.dictionary.com You will find that one of the meanings of 'hacker' there will hurt you again. And I hope you will principally not use those websites too. :-). Amish. P.S. I am a bit against MS too but not blindly against MS.
