I just installed debian sarge from the PCQ Debian dvd on a new elcheapo laptop. It is fast, stable and absolutely easy to install. Infact i found the expert install a trifle irritating (thought easier for a newbie) while partitioning as u require more key presses than the plain old cfdisk. IMHO in a production environment stability and continued subsequent maintanence (very minimal but neccessary) is most important. The debian apt packaging system and hundreds of fast mirrors make maintanence a breeze - even for a nontechie newbie. Debian packaging policy also insists on stability over other factors (except freedom). And since u are going to pay someone to install insist on debian - the commercial-politic free distro. Also i have found the reiserfs file system to be astoundingly reliable - 8 to 10 power outs a day for the past 6 mths without any file corruption. In a world without Gates who needs windows - welcome to happy hassle free computing. rgds jtd

Dear Mumbai Linuxers: I have decided to take the plunge by migrating to a GNU-Linux desktop, and have just bought a 240MB/40GB/1.66GHz AMD Athlon for this purpose, to work alongside my Powerbook running Mac OSX. I need someone to help me install and configure the new machine with a Linux distribution and basic set of applications, and and would also like to discuss my options and choices in this regard. I am wondering if someone on the list can visit my studio in Dadar to help with the installation over the next few days, and discuss how much remuneration is appropriate for the work. I am going away on 25 December and will not return to Mumbai until mid-February and wanted to do it before leaving, in the coming week. Anyone with copies of the archives of firewall-wizards from 1998 to 2002 is also requested to send them. (I know of the web based archives. As a community, we need to examine alternatives to proprietary software and suggest alternatives from the open source world. Therefore, we need to evangelize the usage of languages like Python in education, academia and for software development. Amish Munshi of Novell will be talking on Mono, a subject that has generated a lot of traffic on this list. The venue for the meeting will be KReSIT at IIT Mumbai. Getting to IIT Bombay ===================== IIT Bombay is located in an area called Powai in the Central suburb called KanjurMarg in Mumbai. The best way of reaching there is by a combination of Road and Rail. Mumbai has two main suburban train tracks respectively called after the Central and Western Railways. The suburban trains of Mumbai are called 'local' trains. If you are on the Central Railway, get down at Kanjurmarg or Vikhroli and take an auto to IIT. The auto will take around Rs. 15 - 20. To board any of the buses, you'll have to walk slightly till a bus stop on the main L.B.S.Road and take any Andheri/Borivali bound bus. The fare is around Rs. 3. If you are coming from the Western Railways, get down at Andheri and take any of the buses going to Mulund from the eastern side of the railway station. The fare would be roughly Rs. 6. Alternatively, you could take an auto which will take around Rs. 55 to IIT. Getting to KReSIT within IIT ============================ The new KReSIT building is now fully operational - one of the most impressive structures in the IIT-Bombay campus! The KReSIT building is the first big structure one comes across when entering IIT. Approximately a 5 minute walk from the Main Gate, it is situated on the right side of the road after Hostel 10 and the wide road going right to the Y-Point gate. It is equally close to the Y-Point gate; turn right after entering the Campus, and take the first left where you will see the Central School Ground. Continue walking and enter the second gate on the right. You can see the white and blue KReSIT building right away! SSH

Hello Linuxers, Whenever I try to ssh form my rh9 box to other boxen on the network, the fingerprinting fails. The error given is "cannot create directory /home/foo/.ssh". This directory is, ofcourse, required to store the fingerprint (known_hosts) and dsa keys. I verified the perms on the directories and even tried creating the directory manually, but no go. My ultimate aim is to setup ssh without keys, so that a user can ssh to/from my box without being prompted for passwords or passphrases. Any help would be appreciated. hi, Amish, Waiting for your session ! Well, I asked Harsh for any books on Mono, he suggested me to read doc. of Mono but, I need some books that can be use as base before jumping into Mono World. What is prerequistics for Mono development ? I'm totally new to .Net and c#. Could you please bring a copy of a cd that contains latest Mono stuffs ?
