Unless there is a firewall which is allowing outgoing DNS queries on port 53. Best way is to configure a caching DNS server on the proxy itself. And use that as the DNS server LAN wide. It would also speed up things a bit. bash proxy settings

Could someone tell me how to configure proxy setting in bash. I found some links that mention the http_proxy variable to be set, but over there the proxy is of the format http://proxy.abc.com:80 now the proxy i'm using dosn't have the http:// in the begining :( Anand

Mumbai cyber cafe license requirement makes Microsoft OS mandatory

Have just learnt that under the recently announced licensing scheme for the cyber cafes in Mumbai, the Mumbai police under its list of requirement vide point no 14 insists on a copy of Microsoft Open License. This license fee is apparently prohibitive and apparently still unclear on the licensing term for public use, and, restrains cyber cafe operators from choosing any other alternative operating systems. I would like to hear from others who have more details. That is why I asked, because according to him the information was a few years old. In any case, I think the learning curve of GIMP and Blender will never be as steep as keeping a Windows machine virus free. Why? This is because the latter is close to impossible. Moreover customers do not appreciate going to a cyber cafe just to plug in their floppy or pendrive and have a virus remove all their precious data. Secondly a cyber cafe is a place people primarily for browsing the Web using a Web browser. I am not sure how many cyber cafe's have the necessary bandwidth to allow _all_ their users to _simultaneously_ engage in voice chat or video chat. Therefore a viable alternative is to earmark a few machines which are only going to be used only for browsing (and some text based IM) to be converted into GNU/Linux or *BSD or any other free operating system. Moreover it would be nice to have the cyber cafe association issue a press release expressing their preference towards free software wherever feasible. Has anyone on this list traded on hdfcsec.com using firefox? If so what kind of tweaking is required to make firefox operational for this site. there is an IEs4linux 'alternative' available, but I am worried abt security.
