Mounting /proc failed.

Here is what happens when one I boot a RH9 IBM xseries box. EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Freeing unused kernel mamory: 132k freed INIT: version 2.84 booting Settomg defai;t fpmt (latarcyrheb-sun16): [ ok ] Welcome to /etc/rc.d/rc.synsinit: line 70: 35 Segmentation fault LC_ALL=C grep -q "Red Hat" /etc/redhat-release Red Hat Linux Press 'I' to enter interactive startup. Mounting proc filesystem: [failed] /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 90: 42 Segmantation fault LC_ALL=C grep -q .initrd /proc/mounts Confuguring kernel parameters: Error: /proc must ve mounted To mount /proc at boot you need an /etcfstab line like: /proc /proc proc defaults In the meantime, mount /proc /proc -t proc [failed] Setting clock (localtime): Fi Jan 23 09:06:35 MST 2004 [ ok ] Loading default keymap (us): [ ok ] Setting hosname mgserver.net: [ ok ] /etc/rc,d/rc.sysinit: line 182: 65 Segmentation fault LC-ALL=C grep -iq"nousb" I know RH9 is old, but lets not debate on that for now. Checked all hardware, raid, disks, even replaced RAM. So not a hardware issue. Gives same error while booting to single user mode too. Able to boot to rescue mode. Examined fstab. Has proper proc line. Grub is set up fine too, Did nothing special to trigger the error. Was getting segfaults with grep, rebooted, got stuck. Consulted lots of experts, google, RH kbase. No go. Perhaps you mortals can save us a reinstall? Why on earth won't proc mount? Regards, NMK.

[OT] Self loading USB drivers possible?

But the manufacturer do not follow standard usb descriptor for generic MSD, and when descriptor does not match, the generic driver is not used by PC. Importance of Free Software in Democracies.

Hello All, At the recent speech by Mr. George G. of FSF Europe in HBCSE, he mentioned a very important point which I liked and want to pass on to those who did not attend. He explained..... In today's world knowledge is getting more and more digitized. Due to this digitization, it is the major Corporates that are controlling access to this knowledge through software code. In a Democracy where information (knowledge) should flow freely and be accessible to all, this control of knowledge by the software giants is dangerous and unwanted. This is even more important for the Governments to ensure that third parties do not control their data. Therefore its is absolutely necessary that Governments of Democratic Nations adopt free software and formats in order to safeguard their data and get it out of the clutches and control of the corporate entities. -- Regards, Rony. However, what actually happens for many devices such as cameras, the default application (say for instance iPhoto in the case of a camera) starts up and the file navigator (Finder) does not show the device loaded at all (which is the default behaviour for ordinary mass storage devices). is IE6.5 or higher w3c compliant

As the subject says is IE6.5 or higher w3c compliant and how compliant are other browsers in displaying a w3c compliant page. Basically there is a conflict going on at a potential client since one of the vendors wants that crap to run so that his app which is browser based can function. If the o/p of his app is w3c compliant FF / Konqueror / lynx should work properly and he shouldnt care what runs on a client. Since the vendor is a software giant and i will be kicking ass, i want to make sure. google throws up pages of irrelevant (almost) stuff. On a related note are there standrds for xml and does M$ push it's own version. -- Rgds JTD

Can not login in KDE

I am Debian Etch user. Last day onwards i am not able to login in KDE ( GUI ) with normal user. but console login was successful. I created new user but stilll not worked. I enabled ROOT login by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc. So i am able to login with ROOT in GUI Syslog shows following error can't save user authentication in home directory. -- With Regards Abhishek Amberkar There is no operating system but GNU, and Linux is one of its kernels.
