The eb-lite messenger comes closest here. It doesn't have a UI. Absolutely no UI at all. Instead it listens on a TCP socket and any UI can connect and talk to it over that. There currently exist a few UIs out there. We just need people to write more.
It's currently only in CVS, so either join through anoncvs, or wait.
