So how can I get this done in KDE ?

ALT+F12 is already registered as a shortcut key in KDE. IF you are not using that shortcut, then go to KDE Control Center and disable it. This might help.
I tried this also. I disabled Alt+f12 in Kde Control Center. Still no luck. :(
