explicitly specified the speed by using the speed option to 40x. But that doesn't help. I tried with the same media and writer on my Windows machine with similar configuration and it writes it much faster.(It took only 4 minutes on Windows but 11 minutes on Linux).
Try setting the -forcespeed option instead of speed. By default cdrecord picks the optimal speed for the cd you've slipped inside. This is necessary as it automatically detects the chemical makeup of the cd and decides optimal speed and power setting for the blank. More often than not writing at higher speeds than that of the rated speed of the blank gives coasters or degraded cds.
try using xcdroast.
you might use cdrecord too. but try the newer version of cdrecord which should be 2.0
