Spam is about consent, not content.
Devdas Bhagat
right. The contents are good the consent was absent hence qualifies as spam.

yes, reported as abuse to google groups. if more people report it, he may be banned.

but you are still subscribed - flame them
this is not the first time that there has been a mass subscription to members of this list - i think the listadmins need to explain why the membership of this list is public.

Could you give me the unsubscription link? And ever since I started using my gmail account with this mailing list I have been getting a lot of SPAM. My other gmail account sees even more traffic but I never get SPAM on that one. It's even older than this one. How is it that spam bots are able to harvest our email ids? I thought the email ids were removed while archiving the content for online viewing!

We cannot stop people from registering, membership of this list needs to be public. As for protection against spam, should we consider any pipermail alternative?

Uh, why should the membership be public? The subscription for needs to be, but member list can be admin only.

The email links are coming from the text of the reply messages. In the message above the original sender's name appears but in many cases the email address appears in place of the name. Is there any common setting that members coould use in their email clients so that only the name appears?

Rony.

why? i noticed that in yahoogroups, the membership list can only be accessed only by the list admin and that the email addresses of members are not shown in the archives also

Oh, okay.. i meant list subscription is open to all, but subscribers list is only available to administrators. Tell me if you can access it without authentication?
Anurag
I went to my Google account settings. It showed me that I was a member of this Cyber Crime group. There was an option there which said "Do not allow administrators to automatically add you to the group." or something like that. I simply enabled it and unsubscribed. Now I guess it'd work because I'm using Gmail. Not sure about others...

I dont know how but people are able to harvest the email addys of this list. I started getting spam on this email address only AFTER i had subscribed to this list. The same was the case with hotmail. Remember i changed my email from hotmail to gmail because of the SPAM issue?
There might be some misconfiguration, some vulnerability in the system which allows non users (or even regular users) to access the membership list. Please check it from you part...

But I must point out over here that GMAIL spam filter ROCKS!!! It filters out all spam messages almost perfectly except for a ILUG-BOM message here and there =P

If I were a spammer, I'd go for the cheapest option to harvest emails. I would subscribe to this list in digest mode and scrape the mails I receive. Can't stop that.
Note: This is a test mail

Dinesh, i do not see any misconfiguration in mailman. The only vulnerability i could see is display of complete email addresses in the pipermail archives. I've edited pipermail to mask user's domain name part behind a masking domain. let's see if it works.
Please note that this list is also archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/linuxers@mm.ilug-bom.org.in/ Some intelligent spammer can harvest emails addresses from there also.

Great. But it wont do any good for me as I am already on some spam lists.... Lets hope new members benefit from this.
Bye,
