Hi,
Can we make it a practice|rule to NOT respond to threads that are marked Commercial, especially potentially inflammatory responses? We could have some kind of automated filter or something that blocks off replies to commercial threads. We could follow two simple rules:
1) Moderate Commercial tagged emails so that there is no spam coming in 2) Disallow replies to commercial threads. Any inquiries can be made off-list.
Probably a bit more work for the mods but most off-the-line threads seem to spawn themselves from Commercial threads of late.
Regards,
Can we make it a practice|rule to NOT respond to threads that are marked Commercial,
Iam new to the group and i use opera to surf/read/write emails on an u/xubuntu system. I do not see any marking on any of the emails suggesting commercial. I have not opted for the daily digest. Where does it say its commercial or otherwise?
My apologies in advance if this was too simple a question. :)

Every commercial email's subject line carries a [COMMERCIAL] tag. you might want to write a filer based on subject.

i dont agree - *any* post must conform to list guidelines, and if commercial posts dont, they need to be discussed on list. And remember - intervention of list admins is the last resort. We seem to be doing a pretty good job of policing the list ourselves. I dont think anyone has been banned or moderated since I joined this list. Which is a great thing.

There is no need for moderation. If you are bothered by it you can filter the mail yourself. I see that you have a gmail account. You can create a filter with To: linuxers@mm.glug-bom.org and has the words "Commercial" in the subject/mail add add a tag called "likely spam". Then delete the mails automatically or manually delete them in your leisure time.

Please, for god sake do not mark *any* email delivered from server as spam. A month back we were facing a problem where Yahoo Mail was filtering all list emails into spam folder.
If filtering is required then write meaningful filters please.

Hi Anurag,
If you read my mail again, I have only asked him to _tag_ the mail as "likely spam" and not move it to the spam folder :-). Get the difference ?

Point noted. I am not much of a gmail user ;-) Take my comment in general. Its a pita to get ip addresses delisted.

It's not really a bother; infact entertaining at times ;-) It's just that sometimes tempers flare for no reasons and it heats up the list. But I guess you're right -- moderation should be the last resort for anything at all. I take my suggestion back :)
