Concept of Copy/Paste.

Hello All, What is the concept of copy paste in linux as compared to windows? In windows I can save highlighted text or links in the clipboard and close the source program or editor. In linux, if the source program/editor is closed, it does not highlight the 'paste' option in the destination program or editor. Case: As a safety measure links from emails are never clicked directly, instead they are copied and then pasted in the addres bar of the browser. In this process if the email client is closed, the 'paste' option is not highlighted. Same thing happens when saving parts of a web page text from a browser to a text editor. So in linux is the concept of copy based on the an active link only as compared to windows, where a seperate memory pad is used to store the text? Connected Online Icons freeze.

Hi All I am working on Debian sarge 2.6.11,When I connent to internet, through my Reliance Landline Connection, all the desktop shortcuts stop responding whereas the task bar Icons respond mostly though sometimes they to turn obstinate. Initially i thought it could be because of the Firestarter as when i tried to log in through Terminal 1 or any other tty i get characters like this running that i cannot run any command. IN=PP0 OUT= MAC= SRC=220.226.9.18 DST=220.226.6.188 LEN=48 TOS=0X00 TTL=45 ID=41026 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=265 1 DPT=445 WINDOW=16384 As soon as i killl pppd after sometime the system may work. I neither see any heavy disk activity during all this. Tried google but could not locate the same error somebody facing too. Patch Kernel 2.6.11

Hi, I am using Slackware 10.1. The default kernel is 2.6.10. Slackware gives the unmodified kernel source along with the Source CDs. I installed kernel source 2.6.10. Then I downloaded the patch for kernel 2.6.11 from kernel.org and successfully applied it. After that I apply patch 2.6.11.1 which also got applied, but after that patch 2.6.11.2 gives me error. I tried it many times and checked that I am not making any mistakes, but every time 2.6.11.2 gives me error. When trying to apply patch-2.6.11.2, I get the following error. (I have tried with both the patch kernel script, as well as using the patch command directly, both with same result), root@localhost:~/linux-2.6.10# ./scripts/patch-kernel . . patch-2.6.11.2.bz2 Current kernel version is 2.6.11.1 (Woozy Numbat) Applying patch-2.6.11.2 (bzip2)... 1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file Makefile.rej Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! Now as per the message if this file contains patch file "2.6.11.2" has contents which are already applied then the next file "patch 2.6.11.3 " should at least successfully apply. I tried to jump to 2.6.11.3, but of course that also gives me error. After applying patch 2.6.11.1 the top level Makefile in the source directory says, VERSION = 2 PATCHLEVEL = 6 SUBLEVEL = 11 EXTRAVERSION = .1 NAME=Woozy Numbat Now if we have look at the patch file 2.6.11.2, then it says, diff -Nru a/Makefile b/Makefile --- a/Makefile 2005-03-12 21:16:32 -08:00 +++ b/Makefile 2005-03-12 21:16:32 -08:00 @@ -1,7 +1,7 @@ VERSION = 2 PATCHLEVEL = 6 SUBLEVEL = 11 -EXTRAVERSION = +EXTRAVERSION = .2 NAME=Woozy Numbat <snip> Now shouldn't the " -EXTRAVERSION" say ".1" ? In fact, none of the patch file in 2.6.11.x says "-EXTRAVERSION=x". All of them are empty. But the subsequent "+EXTRAVERSION=x" is present in all patch files. I am really confused. What I did next was delete the whole source directory. Re-copied the source directory, applied the 2.6.11 patch (which gets applied successfully, in any case). Then instead of applying any other 2.6.11.x patches, I directly tried to apply 2.6.12 patch and it got applied without any errors on the screen. Now I am not sure whether I have done the correct thing or not. Secondly, I still can't figure out why am I not able to apply any patch in the 2.6.11.x series subsequent to 2.6.11.1 ? What am I doing wrong ? The Documentation directory along with the source does not contain any instruction/suggestions to apply extraversion level patches. If it's too incoherent to read, I won't >bother reading it. Lots of posts here and elsewhere are like that. If saying anyways instead of anyway makes it incoherent. Then so be it. There are far too many things wrong with people that I don't have time to change and i don't think this rule will last/work. But then that's just me being myself. I am against using sms lingo though.. in any case, posting an indecipherable question almost guarantees NO answer. so it's the poster's loss and he will learn. ^^^^ Don't burden the moderators or whoever has to scan thru.. with rules like this. GTK+ & C on winblows...

Hi guys, Due to unfortunate circumstances beyond my control I have been unwillingly forced to use GTK+ on the winblows platform. Now I miss my ol' RPMs, gcc etc... and I have reached a dead end!! I don't know what to install and where! I have downloaded the following things: 1. DevC++ (latest with mingw32) 2. glib-runtime 3. glib-devel 4. gtk+ runtime 5. gtk+ devel 6. atk runtime 7. atk devel 8. gettext runtime 9. gettext tools 10. libiconv 11. pango 12. pkgconfig All(except devc++) from this site: http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/downloads.html Now I asked uncle ol' google but he wouldn't give me a guide to install and get gtk+ apps compiling on windoze with devc++.
