new idea, screen reader for KDE desktop

hello, with a lot of accessibility related talk going out on this list, I just discovered that some thing is yet to be done. there is a big hole in the accessibility of gnu/linux desktop. while the gnome desktop is getting more and more accessible slowly, there is nothing but an un organised start made on the k desktop side. there is a speach front end for the k desktop it is called ktts. the link was given to me by roni it is http://accessibility.kde.org/developer/kttsd/index.php if any one want to have a look. so we will not be re inventing the wheal but use the wheal to build up a car. + we have the engine of the car also. I am refering to festival speach synthesizer. the mattter of fact is that it will be easiest to convert blind computer users to k desktop and thus linux, if we can provide a good screen reader. there are applications on the k desktop which make transition from windows to gnu/linux much easy as compared to gnome. and then the programmers or any one interested can be gathered together for this kind of an organisation. and the finansial aspect is that we can earn by providing this service to blind people. they can and will happily give out a few thousand rs for this service as compared to rs. 80000 + for some screen reader on windows. thanks all waiting for feedback. FOSS elective textbook

Hi, As you all know Anna University has offered two FOSS elective subjects in the engineering and MCA streams. The syllabi for this has been drafted by NRC-FOSS and the textbook on elective 1 has been published. We are now writing the text book on elective 2. make menuconfig for kernel does not work in ubuntu.

hello all, just a few minutes back I tried to compile a kernel by using make menuconfig. it is giving so many errors that I can't even post on this list. what could be the problem? am I missing some packages on my ubuntu 6.06 server? I have the build-esssential package installed which probably has installed glib libc 6 etc along with gcc 4 and make. now I want to knwo what else is remaining? it appears to me that even ncursis is also installed although I am not quite sure of the same. I have linux2.6.16.18 kernel source which I downloaded from kernel.org since I needed a vanila kernel. any suggestions? Krishnakant.

pam_tally & idle or inactivity close's the session

Hi Friends, Any one here has an idea on configuring pam_tally. I want that the user account should be locked after 3 tries and automatically reset after an hour . Another request whenever the session is idle or inactive the session should automatically close. Please help I need to configure this. Thanks & Regards Ryan Coelho.

video recording on ubuntu

Aim: To be able to record video on Ubuntu. Apparatus: a) China make Wireless camera and receiver. b) Receiver A/V can directly be plugged into a VCR (or any recording device). c) However, I would like to record on the PC. Currently running Ubuntu Dapper Drake. d) Have an external TV tuner Card. The receiver can be plugged in here. Procedure? I didnt see any relevant software in ubuntu that will allow me to do this. FSF Certified Trainer

Hi, I am currently undergoing training for my company in Coimbatore. We have many courses to complete in the two month period, one of them labeled as "Linux". That course happened yesterday. It was something really new for me as I got to know some very new things about GNU/Linux Systems: => Stallman and Linus came together to make Linux => Linus was developing on Minix and then he had an idea to create Linux, which he shared with others on a mailing list and all of them started working on Linux together (rather than him announcing the first prototype on usenet). => The default Linux installation is as a server attached to dumb terminals. => The shell, etc for Linux was created after the kernel. => The default is only console. If you want GUI with Unix, you need to *buy* X-Windows. => symlinks are exactly like windows shortcuts and much more. My point is not to make fun of the professor as I believe many do not really even make an attempt to understand the history of anything, leave alone GNU/Linux. That said, trainers and teachers should be fairly accurate in all that they give to their audience. All I said above doesn't simply apply to the trainer I experienced yesterday. Everyone using GNU/Linux in the mainstream only know that they're using "Linux" and that it's simply another Unix that can be only used in servers. It actually reminds me of a comment by a very senior person in my firm -- "Linux? Why? Doesn't it require, like, expensive hardware or something?" Is it possible for FSF to take some initiative in starting a Training Certification program which will ensure that the trainers themselves are well trained? FSF would be the best choice to design such a course as it would more or less ensure that the trainer training is not Distro-centric. I understand deficiency of funds would be the first problem though.
